I expected Hightower to get the tag, but sense he won't be getting the tag, I think someone will overpay & it won't be the Patriots.

Miguel's Patscap as of Sunday had us with 60.5 million under the cap.

Even if we extend Butler, I expect him to keep the same cap number for 2017 (We did this with Gronk) & make him happy with guaranteed money.

I expect Logan Ryan to get overpaid, so I doubt he will be back & although I like Harmon, I don't expect us to overpay for him either.

So where do we spend the 60M+ this year?

No idea.

Branch and Long will probably be back but both will be pretty cheap.

Calais Campbell is an option but IDK if he will a ton as he is older but still very good.

I would be happy to sign Mangold.

I agree across the board. Andrews really struggled in pass blocking in the playoffs & I would love to see Mangold
Added to our line.

We may not have a choice on butler.
He is an rfa. Someone could sign him to an Eric berry type of contract and we would have to match or he walks

Celts faced similar tactics (yeah, a hundred years ago) when Knicks signed McHale to an offer sheet.

Don't want to lose Butler. Or HT. We'll see.

Edge defender (and Butler)

I think Belichick will have multiple lower paid players as opposed to one high paid.

Calais Campbell's age could actually keep him to a reasonable price tag (3 yrs 33-36 million). Similar player to Seymour.

Why wouldn't Branch get big money?

Cause this will be his last year and he is a run stopping specialist generally. He is a good player but he likes to be here and will happily play here for 1 more year for 3-4M as opposed to spend his last year on a loser for an extra 1M.

Butler will get a first round tender offer. Which means a team will have to give us their 1st round pick to sign him. He will cost 4+ million with the first round tender.

And a team may make him a top corner offer.

Use the 4 million from danny's salary. I like danny but 6 million's too rich for him although he has been clutch in the big games.

Dola? Dola isn't getting 6m? No chance in hell. I don't know the big difference between cap hit and salary but he won't make more than 1.5-2m.

Definitely Branch's last year playing football, or being here on the NEP? Has he discussed retirement?

Incredibly underrated season, defensive MVP for mine. Branch was magnificent.

so...

we are way over the cap...that's not usual for us, but it could be to a bunch of recent chagnes internally to team and externally to whole NFL

usually we use close to 90-95% of the CAP b/c thats the most efficient, using as much as you can while allowing for flexibility if needed

that means we have a LOT of money to use, and if we don't...it will be very out of the ordinary

there's players you that NEED to get this money, and even if it's not this or that specific player, overall they need it...but if we just go for bargain players again (which is fine by me b/c i trust BB and we know how its turned out recently) then what will our new mode be? using 70% of the cap to the every other team's 95%? that would be a hell of a roadblock

we need to get up to 90% of cap space use minimum...that means some of the players you pay need to be the best/superstar/more expensive type, otherwise w/ a limit of 51 salaries counting against you, you simply will not reach the threshhold we're used to seeing the Pats reach

He was huge. I agree with you that he may have been the defensive MVP.

The Browns carried over 50.1 million dollars from last season, and they obviously could have used as much help as possible.

People ask: why would the SB winning Pats not spend all of their available cap space, but a better question to ask is why the ****tier teams in the league like CLE carry so much money over (they were still projected to have over 50m dollars this year, even without carrying a penny over. Now they have over 100m dollars in available space)?

The Pats are in good position in the sense that they have the 5th most space available, but they also have less than 40 players under contract, compared to teams with similar cap space like Tampa or Chicago, who both have about 20 more players under deals. That means that you have to take the 60-65m dollar available space with a grain of salt, but any way you look at it, the latest CBA (allowing teams to carry money over) has changed things up a bit, and Belichick isn't going to fall behind. He will field the best team possible while also keeping an eye towards the future. The only question is how much he'll carry over and what his bigger picture will include. That will obviously depend on your opinion.
