OK, so Maske is usually quite good, but this one just boggles the mind - - basically the Patriots won the SB, they and their fans should quite bellyaching about Deflategate, because they proved it was all sill and, by the way, they will always be tainted in the minds of the nation.....but the Pats and their fans should just be quiet because they won the SB.

OK, maybe he didn't quite think it through.

What follows the column in 101 and counting comments that are COGENT and not idiotic (pleasant surprise!) that completely take apart his premise.

Enjoy!

Deflategate is over. So why won’t the Patriots let it go?

A lot of people just don't get the region. We're a lot closer in mindset to the UK than Nebraska or California.

This is a prime example of it. We're never going to let this **** go. Ever. Just because we're fortunate enough that our team won the SB again doesn't mean that 10 years of eating **** over 'Cheatriots' fake news just goes away.

**** them all.

The minute the haters in the rest of the nation lets it go, we'll let it go.

That is something that Mark Maske simply didn't understand. He was calling for a unilateral surrender. The Pats and their fans should stand down, but then he states that the haters will carry on forever about it. That is some first class horse manure, right there.. Will grow your plants lickety split there, Mr. Maske.

The epic Washington Post comment section educated him.

I am mad about the draft picks but we got our revenge on Deflategate big time. I am not mad about it anymore. I will however always hold Roger Goodell accountable for what happend.. even if he is just the mask. In other words the NFL front offices until there is change can **** right off.

The arrogance of the inside the beltway mentality, they know what is best for everyone else.

Eh, Christine Brennan and Sally Jenkins write for the same paper. And, as I mentioned in the title, Maske is usually quite fair to the Pats. His reasoning on this one is just way off.

Most people here paying attention know that, other than the Boston Herald, there has not been one paper better to the Pats during all this than the WaPo.

Let's stick to the subject.

One of the best comment sections I have ever read. Intelligently written posts that still have the ability to smack you in the face if you're on the wrong side of them.

Great stuff.

I am mad everytime somebody says, "But you lost the draft picks for a REASON - they just don't do that for NOTHING".

So yeah, it ain't over.

They can never give me back the years spent enduring this tripe. I'll never let it go, personally. I had to work to not let it impact my enjoyment of football during some of the best seasons my team had so I'll resent it for forever.

I'm sorry, Maske cannot write that without being of a similar mindset to the MCI. To attempt to tell this fanbase that it should just let it go is at the very least arrogant, and certainly paternalistic.

Absolutely! A cerebral...

...beat down.

People are going to think what they will. I'm not going on a crusade to convince the uninformed mob of the error of their ways. I am simply enjoying this sustained run of excellence that may never be equaled.

When Tom and Bill are done and the Pats are middle-of-the-road or worse, the media will find someone else to feed to the unwashed masses.

Do you think Stooler fans care what people outside the armpit that is Pittsburgh think? They throw their Lombardis in your face and tell you to **** off. We as Pats fans need to start acting like big brother for once and stop worrying what these other losers think.

Haters gotta hate.

I though this sentence was worth picking out, just to emphasize the ridiculousness of Maske's position:

It was another matter for Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to emerge from the Patriots’ plane following their ride home from Houston wearing a shirt depicting Goodell wearing a clown nose.

Patricia didn't wear this shirt at a press conference, at an open practice or during the parade. Cameras are always around and the team was just returning from winning a SB, so it's not like Patricia didn't know he could be filmed wearing that shirt. The extent of it was, what, 2 still photos. If he really wanted to send a message, he would have worn that shirt in a setting with more media around.

Further, it's hard to believe that people are upset with Patricia with wearing that shirt, but don't say anything about the NFL putting out false info to the media and the Patriots to kick off deflategate, then Goodell lying continuously through the process.

its his "conform or get scorned" attitude that's so prevalent in the media that really gets me

If we had a real local sports media there would be dozens of articles calling for goodell to get over it, put it behind him and admit he was wrong.

Why don't those Duke Lacrosse players let it go? They were acquitted and they received money from the university. Duke ended up getting lacrosse back. Why can't they forget about it?

After all, we all know "something" happened, right?
Great analogy. In the Patriots' case, none of the perpetrators have been punished for their crimes. In the Duke case, the Durham District Attorney, Mike Nifong, was disbarred and found in contempt of court. However, the Duke president, Richard Brodhead, and numerous members of the administration and faculty who convicted and punished every member of the Duke lacrosse team on the testimony of a drug addicted stripper, since convicted of second degree murder, have gotten off without any penalty.

The bane of the human condition is aptly summed up by the thinking, or lack there of, behind that statement.
Easier/simpler to rely on others to do your thinking/fill in informational gaps (defer to authority) than be skeptical and say "What 'they' say doesn't matter. I'd have to look into it, give it some thought, then I could make a good conclusion". The Goodell's of the world and the whole cesspool section of the ivory tower dwellers definitely would not like that. Fortunately for them, unfortunately for us, there is no real danger of the human condition halting it's thoughtless deference to authority.
