DL & EDGE Players: Run stuffers, designated pass rushers, hybrids, etc

I think Vince Biegel ability to shread the blocks, rush the passer and cover are impressive. He could be the future replacement for Rob Nikovich.

I'll definitely have to dig into his game more. Thanks for the comment!

Apologies I'm pretty behind with this project. I probably will have more time after the Combine. Work & personal stuff has me pretty tied up for the rest of the month.

I just went back wnd reread this thread last night. It's really as good as it gets.

Take your time, the draft is still months away, and real life waits for no man.

Solomon Thomas.
Chicago trade to few spots down and then trade for Jimmy. And Pats take Solomon Thomas. Is he that good, around 8-10 first round pick?

He is every bit that good. He will probably end up around 290 in the pros, which is basically Aaron Donald.

Go watch him against North Carolina in the sun bowl. Probably the best single game tape for any prospect. Just dominated every snap.

Thank you. I agree with Fletcher, that your reports are as good as they get. Please take your time. Your time and effort is much appreciated.

Soloman Thomas could be another Trey Flowers.

A bigger, more athletic and powerful version, with shorter arms.

I would take that every day of the week.

He'll be top 5 on my Pats big board ahead of Jon Allen.

Don't have an order yet, but Garrett, Thomas, Lattimore, J Adams and Hooker are my top 5 for the Pats.

Mine too. I like Allen a lot, but the lack of athleticsm will eventually be an issue, and the shoulder surgeries are a concern.

Him and Barnett I find very similar actually. They are the best two technicians in the draft for the defensive front positions, but lack of ideal length and athleticsm will hurt them. Barnett at least has age on his side and time to work on his hips and explosion. Allen is pretty close to a finished product.

Allen being a finished product is my issue with him. If you're taking someone in the top 5, you really want upside to go with what you already have and I don't see much upside to Allen's game. He'll be a fine starter for 10 years but I don't think he'll be 'best in the league' calibre. I think the upside of the five I listed is so much higher than Allen.

Allen reminds me of Shaun Ellis.

He will be a solid player.

And lastly I watched Malik McDowell. I know to start the year he was a potential top 10 pick but now it seems like he can even drop to the second round. But when I looked at him it seems as if he relies heavily on his explosiveness and his speed to beat his man. But he is only 20 years old so hopefully he will learn to use his hands to his advantage once he gets drafted. It also seems to me at least that he is pretty light, I'm hoping he can pick up weight as well. But I do like his upside overall. I wouldn't mind the pats taking one of these players when the time comes. Hopefully someone finds this useful.
At first Solomon Thomas was my favorite, but boy that Malik McDowell could be something. 20 years old. Huge upside. He should add around 30 lbs and he would be like Armon Armstead. One year proper coaching...

My big concern with McDowell is that he had a terrible reputation with his coaches. They had to beg and cajole him to practice. Word is that he's a me-first type of player who doesn't take well to hard to coaching. Physically, he could be an absolute monster. Mentally / emotionally? I'm not sure the Patriots are the right team for him.

And he just wasnt good this year. If you are that young and have so little good tape, that's a huge concern for me. Not being able to take to coaching certainly shows up. He has terrible technique, which is a problem when you are already undersized inside. He doesn't have the athleticsm to step out to the edge either, so you are really counting on him being a gym rat and putting on 30-40lbs.

He is the one guy in the first I just don't get. He'd be a 3rd-5th rounder for me, and hope that some time in professional environment shapes the player. Given what they went through with Easley, I doubt they go through that again any time soon.

So chance that he is Easley 2. Too bad

I would like to hear your take on Jarron Jones, Notre Dame. He reminds me of Akiem Hicks. At the college level, he seems to be the most dominating DL at the line of scrimmage. He drives the OL back to collapse pocket; maintains balance; takes on double team and shread blocks to make tackles. He doesn't have huge tackle and sack numbers and that is probably why he is under the rader.

Hes been a well known prospect for a few years now, but people just keep waiting for him to take the next step. He has all the physical tools you could want, and has the ability to take over any game, but the motor seems to run hot and cold, and has had enough injuries to slow him down.

He could go anywhere from 2nd-4th round, depending on how teams view his physical skills against his effort level. Lots to like, but lots of questions too.
