warning on the Sally Jenkins article: stay away from the comments section, as idiots abound! Defenders are there too, but the "cheater, cheater" stuff is just bad for the psyche

I'm not flexible enough for that. Even in my younger, fitter days I wasn't flexible enough for any of that.
If you do what @raduray or others have suggested above your post in the thread, you can develop flexibility. Just start where you are and work from there to become more flexible (and likely gain other benefits, as with most exercise).

I don't like to sound conspiracy-oriented, but I imagine there's some brain injury type stuff that Brady (and many others) endure throughout the season that doesn't get registered as a concussion, but has deleterious effects over the long term nonetheless.

I recall a few years back that Brady & Guerrero (discussed in this article) had some claims about products that both protect players from, or aid in the recovery from concussions. I think the media blitz surrounding that has caused them to back off publicly making such claims. However, I wonder what the internal process is like. I wonder whether they really think Tom's doing things that are keeping his brain safer - and whether Tom's long term health will really trend better than that of his NFL peers.

That's why you do it. You get more flexible. There are modifications for a lot of the poses many find difficult using blocks, etc.

Please, please don't dismiss it out of hand. If you are super bendy and flexible you actually don't NEED yoga as much as you do if you not flexible at all.

I'm 45, in good shape, run a lot, play basketball, etc and every morning when I wake up I feel like I was in a car accident.

Dead people have more flexibility than I do.

I'm at that point of picking it up.

I am 52 now. Very active all through college, but sat on my ass for 30 years. Started doing crossfit last summer and struggled through that feeling every day for three months. It was worth it.

We do all kinds of yoga stretches during warm ups, and sometimes those are more painful (e.g., pigeon pose?!) than deadlifts or snatches. And anything "gymnastic" (like with rings) is killer.

I have never been flexible/pliable, but since starting that and doing lots of extra stretches, foam roller work, and other mobility exercises, I only feel decrepit as the result of pushing myself during exercise - never from daily activities.

Check out Kelly Starrett's books on Amazon.

Take the good from lost of disciplines: yoga, gymnastics, and weight training. Getting old is not for sissies.

OMG, I can hold pigeon pose for only so long before I actually feel like I may in fact die.

Yea I gotta to something. I can easily see myself in 15 years unable to do anything active.

Even though I can still fit in the same clothes from when Larry Bird was still playing, its amazing what age and the toll weight-training, playing hoop in asphalt and running on pavement does to your body.

lol.

I heartily second that.

Those doing the yogas: if I may inquire, how long have you been doing it? Curious if your feedback is based on say 5+ years of daily practice or something shorter or longer than that.

I have a constant habit of dropping such healthy habits after 4-6 months once I get bored or don't 'feel' the effects that much.

Thanks!

Hmmm...I started last May. When I started it was specifically to supplement my climbing. I was getting a lot of injuries climbing, lots of tendonitis, shoulder problems, etc. But I haven't had an injury in ages and it is because of yoga. I also noticed increased strength, flexibility and balance fairly soon although it is easy to see those results climbing because climbing is all about strength, flexibility and balance. I do yoga nearly every day anywhere from 30-60 minutes, vinyasa (powerful flow) and a little bit of yin(deep stretching poses held for a long time).

One of our sons was living in Korea for many years and became a Bikram yoga fan. He was a very large OLman when he was in HS but now looks like a slim LB. He has a calendar of yoga positions that mostly look impossible to attain, especially for a man of his size.
