Well Atlantas D was good enough for 50 minutes.. there offense blew the game for them. Most defenses get tired in the 4th quarter.

That isn't the question.
Was Atlanta's defense cumulatively in that football game good or bad?

Their offense allowed those 31 points?

The patriots had 37 first downs. They completed 43 passes. They scored 31 points, 4 TDS and a FG in their last 5 drives.

No defensive game that includes that could ever be considered good, under any circumstances, unless its the Arena league.

But this is partly because of the poor offensive gameplanning. They were gassed.

Put it this way: not every team can do what they did for 2 1/2 quarters. Yes, they got gassed, I realize that, as I said above, if someone said they played poorly I'd agree and disagree (again, not binary). But to unequivocally say they have a bad defense, period? Nope (again, not binary). I cannot agree with that. They were up against the Patriots.

Obviously they lost, and it wasn't b/c of special teams, so they did something wrong. But it wasn't just b/c of defense--it was a team loss: coaching, offense, and defense. That was some complementary football on their part.

Thats a defensive win. All Atlanta needed was a FG and they had 3 golden opportunities to get it and they blew it. Which is fantastic. Watching the game 3x it was painful for 3+ quarters.

I don't know how much stock to put into BSPN but at some point in the 2nd half Atlanta had a 99.7% chance of victory. Atlanta definitely gave up yards and New England owned time of possession but they didn't break until the end. And again it took some luck and bad coaching by Atlanta for us to over come the deficit.

I really don't want to argue about a Super Bowl win but giving up 3 points when your up 28-9 is a win. Ultimately Atlanta's offense is what lost them the game. It took over 6 minutes off the clock for NE to get 3 points.

And that was one of 5 consecutive drives, the worst of them, that scored 31 points.

You have to be out of your mind to pick out the one of 5 drives that they drove 72 yards but held them to a FG and call it good defense.

31 points in 27 minutes.

The Patriots made 2 incredible drives and 2 2 point conversions to tie the game.. It definitely wasn't the biggest mis match in Super Bowl history like you said. If it was the Patriots would have blown them out.


The game is on again tonight just re watch and tell me the Falcons defense was the biggest mis match in Super Bowl history. Everyone and there mother thought the game was over even after they scored the FG to put up 12 points on the board around 10 minutes left in the game.

I have seen the Patriots dominate a defense like they did against Pittsburgh in the AFC championship.. I don't give a **** what the stats say.

Still having trouble seeing how people think this. Were you were thinking this halfway through the third quarter....when we had 3 points on the board, their defense had scored six points, strip-sacked Blount, and had sacked Brady so many times?

Let me put it another way. From reading your post I see: their defense sucks, they did exactly what their coach asked them to do, perfectly, but their offense could not pile up the points to implement their usual gameplan.

So how exactly is their defense the one that sucks? I'm not being a jerk here, but it seems like they pretty much did what they were asked to do, and their offense let them down in the last 3/8 of the game.

The difference is we were one of the few teams with a good enough offense to dig ourselves out of the hole that we got ourselves in, once they implemented their "pile on early" approach.

I don't think their defense sucks. I think our offense and quarterback are just that damned good.

Giving up 5 scoring drives in a row at the end of the game is not a good defensive performance no matter what came before that.

As someone said prior to the kickoff, a classic example of ballhawking defense living off turnovers. Once their pass rush was gone, entire defensive scheme fell apart just like that. But they have shown strong defensive skillset until 28-3, we were supposed to run the ball down their throats, instead Jarrett and Jones were stuffing the run left and right.

Then what's the point? The worst defenses in NFL history create a few 3 and outs .... doesn't make them good

They threw everything including the kitchen sink out there and it worked until they could not make a stop.... that does not make them good

The Pats moved the ball all game against Atlanta. In the first half, the Falcons successfully executed the "bend, but don't break" defense. In the second half, the Falcons' defense bent and then broke.
