2-Point Conversion Question

Maybe it was more recent then I recall, but I am wondering...

When is the last time a team was down by 16 and successfully tied the game up in two possessions by scoring then getting two point conversions in a row?

I honestly can't remember the last time that actually happened. Plenty of times I've seen teams in this position but end up missing either both or at least one.

That was one of the most (of MANY) improbable aspects of the game to me, even when driving down the field, you have that dread in the pit of your gut knowing you still need to get two 2-point conversions on top of things, which is such a stressful ****ing feeling.

yup...I thought the Pats would lose by 1 point by failing on one of the conversion attempts and Ghost would be the goat.

2 point conversions are about a 50:50 proposition, so overall probablity of making two is about 25%.

Yup. Essentially you have to score two touchdowns, the latter of which is on a fourth down.

That's why they had to leave Atlanta some time instead of killing the clock. If they missed the 2 they would have needed an onside kick and FG.

this is a great point, I was torn with how quickly i wanted them to score. Needed time for onside kick and a FG if they failed on the 2 pointer...but certainly didn't want to give ATL enough time either. 56 seconds was about perfect.

I just felt it that the D would get the job done and send it to ot.
More worried about the conversion than the time left.

I have to admit, I kept rewinding to McLellin's penalty for leaping the center, which was called by the side judge when a back judge was right there watching it.

As Troy Aikman said, he jumped the guard more than the center, though he was over the gap.

It a completely legal block, and I was thinking about that as they went down 16.

I've heard they've gone up to 52% with more teams running them of late. I'm a fan of running more 2 points conversions with those odds because there is a potential net benefit of a couple points per season. If you get really efficient and pump the number up to 60%, you're looking at an extra point every other game. I guess most coaches would rather play it conservative with the gimme extra point; the problem being it isn't a gimme anymore.

For this game, I think our chances of converting the 2 points was greater than Ghost hitting two extra points. My God, that would have been brutal for us.

This is one of those things we will hear about in the next couple of days that they have practiced these plays all season.. and were waiting for the right situation. Thought both plays were very well designed and caught Atlanta off guard..

As much as I am upset about Gostkowski missing the Extra Point, his kickoffs were spot on..

Despite the poor extra point kicking this year (no one seems to know why), I stand by the old philosophy that you never go for two except in the last quarter when you can truly assess the need for it or not. There's so much scoring in the 4th in many NFL games, that it's paramount not to miss the 2 too early (I've seen this happy too many times, almost exclusively with teams other than the Pats)

Same here - I was so caught up in the moment, I wanted them to burn the clock to nothing.

It really helped that Atlanta had no time outs!

Hell yeah. When they got the ball to start their final (real) regulation possession I was saying to myself "watch this -- they'll score the TD but miss the 2PC and lose 28-26 just like last year."

I would have preferred that the League change the PAT to still keep a mystery about wha ta team was going to do. They could have done that by simply move the LOS from the 2 to the 1 yard line. That makes the run or pass more possible, and keeps the kick PAT still a high probability but requires an angled kick that can be missed.

Serious question: do we really want Gostkowski trotting out there to tie a Super Bowl with 55 seconds left after missing 2 out of his last 3 (last one in AFCCG and nearly hooked his FG) if we are in fact down 7 there?

Turns out it was a free play on the Dola' catch but still, would rather have the ball in Tommy's hands than Gost's foot with how much lack of confidence he had.

With that being said, I literally texted my buddy we would score and not get the 2 like Denver last year.
