How are we feeling about his play this season? To my untrained eye he seems to have played well but looking at it he has a huge number of penalties and I know PFF doesnt rank him particularly well (for whatever that's worth) but how do we feel? Someone with a better eye for this kind of thing would be appreciated

He was a star in first 5 games, pats were running behind him and Solder, they were creating big holes for Blount, but at the end he was the weakest of the unit.

But Shaq was playing out of place as LG... So unless they move Thuney to C then he's in the right spot?

Thuney is not a center. He's a LG in this league and played very well at the start of the season. The penalties he created are correcatble by the coaching staff and with Scar back next year he's only getting better. Probably our best Draft Pick of the 2016 Draft.

Completely agree he's the long term LG with Shaq at RG. Andrews is fine but nothing special at C. Since both Gs are on the small side iam wondering if they might try get a "bigger" guy at C ??

He has been an excellent acquisition, and will only get better. It shows how well he has done that he is judged as harsh as any other experienced player, when this is his rookie year. Scar will iron out any flaws, and with a possible replacement of Andrews (with someone really good, he is perfectly serviceable and not just someone we need to replace) we will have a great OL for years to come.

I like the Guy. He does his job, and i rather him give a penalty away than someone going to hit the **** out of brady. He will only get better as he gets older. First 5 games he was class, his first season in NFL, he was bound to feel the pressure and heat of it all. Great Draft Pick. Will only get better

What I like about him and the rest of the O-Line is that they have played about 95% of the snaps this year.. which is incredible for an O line..

After 5 games the opposing D also knows how to attack him and what his weaknesses are.. Give him another year at "Dante U" and he will be fine..

#12's sack rate per game has been cut in half this year.. about 2.4 sacks per game in 2015 compared to 1.25 sacks per game in 2016...

He's had his ups and downs but overall he's had a solid rookie year.

I have a little bit of concern over him tomorrow as he seems to have 1-2 bad plays a game but he should be ok and go on to have a very good career

1. Monster preseason: key reason OL could glue together and for keeping only 8 OL on the roster allowing more bodies at other positions.
2. Top rookie season: started on “unbelievable“ level and slowed down (expectedly) towards the end - named in 2016 All-rookie team as best guard - see article:
Patriots LG Joe Thuney named to PFWA 2016 All Rookie Team
3. Ironman season: never missed a snap (except only a few all year in garbage time).

A steal of steel.

quotes:

Who would have guessed that Joe Thuney, the 78th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, would be considered the best rookie guard in the NFL?

Thuney played almost every single offensive snap in 2016 for a revitalized Patriots offensive line that protected MVP candidate QB Tom Brady, and blocked for NFL-leader in rushing touchdowns RB LeGarrette Blount.

Thuney looks pretty big to me. The officia l height and weight listings for these guys are not very reliable IMHO.

Thuney is currently the weak link on the line, but he looks like a long term solution at LG.

Thuney is one of the reason why Solder is having a great season.

Too many holding penalties that seemed to usually happen on longer plays, big plays. I really hope he does not have one on a play the Pats absolutely must have. I like him and think we have a solid player, though.

Why is everybody so down on Andrews? The guy is smart and durable and most importantly seems to have a good chemistry with Brady. I thought our OL became a lot ****tier last year when we replaced Andrews with Stork.

Stork just was too banged up to perform on a high level. He was a very good center in 2014 but the human body just can't take all those concussions. Andrews gets manhandled at times but overall he's a solid center. You could definitely get an upgrade at the position (which is the case with almost every position) and have Andrews as a qualitiy backup.

I feel like I read somewhere that Thuney could play Center, In college he started at the four other Line positions

So Thuney has started at every Offensive line position other than Center but he was the reserve Center his freshman year and was going to be the starting Center his sophomore year but they had him as the Starting Right Tackle his first game, the second game the right guard and the last 10 games at left tackle
