I've seen a lot of commentators suggest that the Atlanta secondary will have difficulty against New England because Atlanta is full of rookies. For example, Skip Bayless predicts a 12-point win by New England: .

I want to point out that this argument is profoundly unconvincing. After playing a full regular season and a couple of playoff games - THEY AREN'T ROOKIES ANYMORE!

This is their second season, not their first, for all intents and purposes.

So what's more concerning here is that Atlanta has done so well in the latter part of the season - after their "rookies" have gained experience.

I'm so angry right now I'm off to write a several thousand word response, just wait here I'll be posting it shortly.

Fair to say that the rooks aren't really rooks any more. But the point remains that their one season of experience is a bit outmatched by TB's 15..

Or Butler's two. Who is one of the best CBs in the league. Or Ryan's multiple. Or McCourty's veteran status. Or Chung's veteran status. Or Duron's experience. Or Rowe's second year. Or Hightower contract year. Or Alan Branch. Or Brown's second year.

Ahhh I'm done who cares. This dude is a joke. Come at us with actual strategy talk and I can talk all day. But suggesting that a consistently terrible pass defense is suddenly weathered and tested based on the one season and a post season is simply a weak argument.

In case they forgot, if the Falcons score under or 24 they typically lose. I wonder why?

Gotta love the humorous replies from the fans of the Derpy Birds.

Atlanta's secondary can be a very good unit with a healthy Desmond Trufant. Even without him, their starting group of Alford, Collins, Allen and Neil is decent. The problem is, look at the number of top ranked pass defenses this offense has been able to pile points on - Arizona, Houston, Buffalo, Seattle, LA, Baltimore, Cincy, San Francisco were all top 12 pass defenses in 2016. Only Denver was able to slow them down. Atlanta's secondary is nowhere close to these groups.

I like Atlanta's defense as a long term proposition. Beasley, Jones, Jarrett, and that secondary are players worth building around. The depth is not there right now.

You may have a point. They have the experience of surrendering 51 TDS. That would be like year 3 if they were a good defense.

When would you consider the rookie season to be "over?" Are we talking their first 5 games? First 8? I don't know.

They're still rookies because they still have lots to learn. Yes, they have more experience than game one. And they'll have more experience in game 30 than game 16. They should continue to grow and develop and mature for several years more.

But players also spend the off-season focusing on themselves, working out and developing their bodies for the next year, and that's when you often see the biggest jump for many players. They haven't had the opportunity to do that yet. So yes, they know more than day 1 or day 10 or day 50. But they still have yet to have the opportunity to focus a few months on fixing or growing certain parts of their game. To me, yes, they are still rookies.

You base your post on the words of two commentators who do not carry any weight in this forum. Secondly, your secondary is competing against arguably one of the smartest QB's who ever played the game.....I forget, what was your point?
