The Most Overlooked Play in NFL History

Some ( Not here) say we are "lucky" to have won our four SB's. Let's take a look the other way:

SB 36: Patriots put Rams away with a run back TD. Except a B.S. holding call let's the Rams back in the game. Doesn't matter. Brady shreds the D to set up A.V.

SB 38: Panthers get the "break" ( No pun intended) of having Harrison out for the second half. Brady shreds the "D" to win the game.

SB 39: Eh honestly that game shouldn't of been as close as it was.

SB 49: Kearse catch was their lucky break. They had it won....

Obviously we know the " Luck" involved in SB 42 loss for Giants.

Unsung hero in SB 49 was Butler a third time. He didn't allow the ball to fall out or drop it when Hightower fell on top of him.

Dude, watch the tape. McGinest had Faulk in a total bear hug. That was a totally legit call.

Harrison was not out "for the second half". He broke his arm during the Panthers' final drive.

I didn't see the SB 36 call. I was going by what some fans on here said about it being " B.S")

I didn't know that.

We've caught breaks too obviously. Like Brady not being called for Intentional grounding in the SB 36 final drive, Kasey kicking it out of bounds, Owens playing on a hurt ankle etc.

Here's a link to the replay of the penalty. It was legit.

Yepp not close. That run back would've ended it.
In my book the holding call caused the runback. Warner would have dumped it off to Faulk if McGinest hadn't tackled him, so the scramble and fumble would never have happened.

But even if he wouldn't have thrown it to Faulk that was a blatant, clear hold, even by 2001 standards. And we would have been ripshit if that was NE driving and that happened to an NE receiver and wasn't called.

Right game, wrong play. It was actually the next or 2 plays later, inside the 5 yard line, Lynch took a handoff off left tackle, and Patrick Chung, Donta Hightower (playing with basically one good arm) and Akeem Ayers combined to stop Lynch short of the goal. The next play - we know what happened.
thing is if they had scored on that play Brady would have plenty of time to get into FG range

What about the fact Kearse never got up ( Ala Freeman & that Vikes defender thinking he made a "play") and went to the end zone? I think Butler pushed him out. If Butler walks away like that Vikes defender did....we are singing a different tune today.
Brady would have had plenty of time

I think the outcome of the game changed everything. If the Pats lost the game, that catch would have been as big as the Tyree catch. But since the Pats won, the focus was on Carroll's decision to throw the ball which ultimately cost the Seahawks the game.

Unfortunately, because the focus is on the Seahawks passing on the one yard line, people forget the Kearse catch which meant the Seahawks were lucky to even be in the position to make that wrong call.
Yep. There are so many things changed by the fact they did not get into the end zone. If they had scored with 25 seconds left or even less if it had been on the next play, Belichick would forever be a "goat" for not using a timeout when Lynch was stopped at the 1. No matter how many times I hear differently, there is no question that was the wrong decision. He should have took a time out with 1 minute left.

There's an excellent video around here somewhere with Belichick and the coaches talking about those last few seconds. Belichick talked about looking over at the other side and his instinct told him to trust his defense. There were also clips showing Belichick having the conversations on his headphone. The guy was Cool Hand Bill.
it was the wrong decision though

EDIT: Anyone who disagrees with this is simply checking their football brains at the door.

There were mistakes at the end of the game but Belichick letting the clock run wasn't one of them.

totally disagree. He considered calling one, but he got what he wanted with the personnel Seattle had on the field and felt that a TO might let them re-consider. Hawks were also not the best under pressure as evidenced by the 2 wasted TO's, so who knows they may have burned their last one there.

From the couch sure it was questionable as to why he didn't call it, I myself was certain they would right away.

Obviously Bill being right there had an eye on how it was unfolding and liked what he saw with the Seahawks confusion. Same as with the timeout before the field goal against the Cardinals. He gets to see details we as fans never have opportunity to catch on a broadcast.

Cues give him an insightful advantage over pure conventional wisdom, because nothing is ever cut and dry. Confusing for us in real time to evaluate the merit of his more divergent decisions, but that's why he's got handfuls of SB rings and we have comfy ass grooves on the couch.

Against Seattle in the second half the patriots offense put in vereen and that loosened things up for Brady.
On defense in the second half, they put in butler and he made plays.

As far as the rest of the nfl, Jackie smith's drop cost Dallas a Super Bowl, similar to wrlker's drop costing us a bowl.

Either way, both sucked. I'll never know why A) Holding wasn't called on the Tyree play. B) Harrison didn't knock the ball straight down.

I don't have a single ounce of blame towards Rodney on that.

He picked up Tyree late (b/c Asante freelanced) and reacted as quickly as he could.

The replay shows he made a 110% effort.

Just a lucky-ass play.

It was a terrible blunder by Belichick.

Not calling a TO DIRECTLY led to the pass play. SEA had only one TO and thus only one shot at running, over three downs. They decided on what they thought was a very low risk pass first, figuring wrongly that the worst case scenario was an incomplete pass and stopping the clock.
