2001 and 2004 Patriots vs Steelers AFCCG on NFLN right now

For anyone who is interested. People talk about arrogance of the pats these but 2001 was unreal how they treated the patriots chances.

A nice trip down memory lane...........one tidbit that wasn't cool...........

Steelers execute deep punt that goes out of bounds pinning the Pats deep in their own territory...........but wait.........Steelers penalty causes a rekick, which Troy Brown runs back for a TD.

On the sideline Cowher is going ballistic at the refs because the original kick was on the left hashmark while the re-kick was snapped on the right hashmark. I found his berating of the refs to be distasteful given that it seemed to indicate THAT is why the Steelers failed to tackle Brown.

As I noted in another thread, I hate the Steelers but actually respect Cowher. That one instance was not cool though.

2004 was an interesting playoff year when compared to some of the modern unbalanced Patriot teams. In 2004 we had a very good O (but certainly not the second coming of the 2001 Rams) to go with a very solid D (but certainly not the second coming of the 85 Bears). Ultimately the Patriots balance is what really helped win the SB. For example of that balance check out 2004's scoring stats:
points scored 437 & allowed 260.((for fun here are the 2016 scoring rankings:
points scored 441 & allowed 250. Huh, that's weird, look at that, those are oddly similar numbers aren't they? ))

I am surprised the points scored is similar to 2004. I expected it to be much higher. That team played some tough games and 2004 defense esp the dline/LB were much superior to this team IMO.

Can't remember the 2004 season enough to speak on how difficult the schedule was. You definitely are right that the D in 2004 was very good to a notable degree. However, I don't recall the secondary of 2014 being much to write home about. Once we lost Law in the first month of the season, that was brutal. Left us with first year(?) Assante Samuel coupled with Gay and I think Harris(?), Earthwind, Wilson -- thank christ we had Harrison back there. Damn was it 04 or 05 as Brown's first season that he was pressed into defensive duties?
IF I am recalling it all correctly, going into the POs I'd take 2016's secondary over 2004's in a heartbeat (law doesn't get hurt and that makes it an argument). But when you are talking Tedy and Willie and RS and rookie Wilfork(?), yea that makes a front 7 comparison stop before it gets started.

Yup that Dline and LB group masked a lot of the secondary issues plus rodney was there. Vrabel,Bruschi,Willie,Wilfork,Ted johnson,phifer.
