OT: Vrabel to interview with Rams

Harbaugh was the Special Teams Coach, a little different than a position coach.

Actually, Wikipedia says he moved with the Eagles to DB coach:

In 2007, after serving as Eagles' special-teams coach for nine years, he became their defensive-backs coach. This fulfilled his request to head coach Reid and improved his chances of landing a head coaching job, since executives at that time viewed special teams coaches as unqualified to move up to head coach.

But quibble away ...

BB has said before Vrabel was one of the smartest football players he's ever coached. He said Mike was so football smart that it was like having another coach out on the field. So this doesn't surprise me.

It would be cool to see him as our DC if MP leaves, though.

I'd like to see Vrabel succeed but he strikes me as the kind of guy who might peak as a coordinator like Rex.

That's fine but he was, and had been, ST coach which still is quite different from a position coach.

He's been a positional coach for two years. What has Vrabel shown to merit an NFL head coaching job?

I think it can be hard for any of us outside of the league to get a bead on which coaches are buzzed about. E.g. Adam Gase was coming off a single year as the OC of the #23-ranking scoring offense and looked like a pretty random pick for the Dolphins, but so far so good.

We all know that Vrabel was considered to have a tremendous football mind and leadership skills as a player. If that's translating well to the coaching arena, people in the game presumably know?

I actually loved Gase simply because he'd gotten good years out of Manning and Cutler (Cutler had a career high passer rating with Gase). Talk about two different personalities.

As for position coaches, on the Patriots (and I assume other teams), they don't just coach their position. They're given other assignments (Red Zone offense/defense as an example) to give ideas and a sounding board for the coordinator. I would assume Vrabel helps Romeo quite a lot in areas other than just coaching his position.

As an aside, when he was at OSU, he was also considered one of the best recruiters in the country.

I'd love to see him come back to the Pats in some capacity.

How about this?

Vrabel gets a HC job fairly soon, takes the Belichick-McDaniels arrogant young genius path and only lasts a couple of seasons. He's hired as a defensive assistant to Belichick, then takes over as DC when Brian Flores gets a HC gig. He ultimately succeeds BB as Patriots head coach.

You heard it here first! (And probably last. )

Why in the world would you compare him to Rex Ryan? I see no similarities at all.

I don't either, except that they might both be best as coordinators and not head coaches.

Good coaches and good QB's are so hard to find. New England has been blessed for many years.

except vrabel (41) is older than belichick when he was hired by the browns (39) and mcdaniels when he was hired by the broncos (32), so it might be too late to label him as an arrogant young genius.
.

I don't think his personality is balanced enough. Seems too far on the "disciplinarian" end of the spectrum. You don't want to be on the other side either ("players' coach" who loses control) but I think what makes BB so great is his balance in this area.

So the Rams are interviewing him next week? Are the Rams assuming Vrabel won't be busy next week?

If the Pats and Texans positions were reversed I don't think I'd like that much.

We know the Pats are heavily favored, but can't these teams just wait until the playoff teams' seasons are over without assuming a loss?

We all strive to get to the Superbowl, and the playoffs are a step along the way.

Our current season is more important than the future of your crappy team. Wait until the big boys are done with their current business, THEN you can contact us about interviewing our assistants to see if they can fix what ails them.

I hated that the pathetic Rats' future was more important than letting Parcells do the job unmolested, that he was hired to do, which was to lead the Pats in an attempt to do what every team hopes their HC will do; win a Superbowl.
