Gronkowski expected to participate in Patriots' offseason program

As the Patriots prepare to wrap their regular season and embark on a Gronkless postseason, there's reason to be encouraged about the big tight end.

Rob Gronkowski is expected to be ready to participate in the team's offseason program, according to a source.

It's good news considering his participation in it is usually a huge indicator of how he performs at the start of the season.

The more important thing is Gronk being ready for training camp in July. That'll give him a full 7 1/2 months to rehab. Even if Gronk doesn't play in any preseason games, training camp practices should be sufficient to get him ready for the season opener next September.

The most important thing is this: in all likelihood, he's not done which is really going to disappoint many outside of this forum and even a few people within it. They know who they are...

Wha?? You mean.......his spine didn't slide off his back and fall off his skin and his knee didn't escape off the socket and his arm didn't crack and slap himself? Well, I never!

I love Gronk but if he ever gets unreasonable salary demands it will be real hard to make that leap with the injury history.
Which is not his fault at all he is a top 5 talent in the NFL with a awful injury history.

They shouldn't have ir'd him, 8 weeks is the SB I think. 6 to 8 weeks is the recovery time.

Gotta give it to Gronk. He'sa party animal but when it comes to Pats, he's all business and gives 1000% with work ethics, game ready and shape. Shame what he had/has to go through with all his injuries/surgeries. Man, imagine how even more potent we would be offensively if Gronk was in this line-up. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

You don't want to mess with backs, especially with his history. It's great that he's looking good for next year but he shouldn't be rushed back with this thing. Get it right, not the tail end of the recovery schedule.

Gord wanted the team NOT to ir him because Gord said his son could play in the SB if they made it...Belichick said no way, valued the roster spot, the rehab was not guaranteed.... Both sides r not happy w each other...

Agree - just compare to JJ Watt situation this year

I would argue that even if there was only a 1% chance of him coming back and being the same player, the Pats should not give up on him. He is the modern day Gail Sayers.

Let's not discuss this in absolutes, its all about value. Cutting Gronk would only save about $1M in cap space, and the Pat's would take a huge $6m hit for a player not playing. Highly unlikely in any circumstance where Gronk is healthy enough to at least work out in the pre-season.

But, in 2018 his salary jumps to 8M, and his dead cap is only $4M. Then, even with a good season in 2017, its probably re-negotiation time. You've got an older TE, who's had a string of injuries who's salary is about to jump. He's probably still worth a lot as an FA, and the Pats are not going to be the highest bidder. The Patriots can pay him $8M more to keep him, or pass and he seeks gainful employment elsewhere. Since he'll only have 1 more year remaining before going UFA, its doubtful they will shell out that much money to keep him for 1 year.

TL:DR, Gronk plays 1 more year, and then likely renegotiates for less or leaves.

I don't know why people are worried about his contract. It's as if they had to pay it. Even conceding the few games he's missed because of back touch ups, he would be on the way to double or tripling all time TE production if not for them screwing up his arm operation and his knee.

He's signed for a while and there is such a thing as an incentive laden contract in the future. His current procedure seems to be minor. See what the future holds and, in the meantime, enjoy watching the greatest tight end who ever was and possibly ever will be. Hopefully with special sauce Marty Bennett on the other side.

Smell the roses.

Gronk is a total class act. He has given everything he has to this franchise.

He's a role model, on and off the field, in EVERY way.

Not just the greatest TE of all time: aside from the qb position( for obvious reasons), he's the best offensive player in the NFL. Period. Has been for a while. Still is.

He's had very bad luck with injuries. Part of that is the all-out, balls-to-the-wall way he plays. But that's part of what makes Gronk, Gronk. And he works his ass off to rehab and get back on the field. Maybe better than any athlete I've ever seen.

Im calling out certain posters here. You know who you are. I just don't understand negative posts about Gronk. That's like a negative post about TB12. Y'all are out of line. And you're gonna regret what you posted when he's gone.

Can't wait to get the big fella back next season. Will be nice to have him when we go for the repeat. :p
