Good research. Interesting.

The similarities stop there.

The 04 team would have owned the 2016 squad. They most likely win 7 or 8 out of 10.

Would have loved to see a Healthy Gronk (and Harrison) matched up against each other.

. Thanks for compiling.
Check out defensive 3rd downs!
2004 38.8% good for 21st in the league omg
2016. 37.2% good for 4th in the league. What the hell?

This is exactly why I tell people that they can't expect a defense like they've grown up watching. Rules have changed. The NFL is an offensive game now (hah; in more ways than one -- thanks Goodell). For the era the current Patriots defense plays in, they are VERY good.

Loved that 04 team. Personally think it was the best one - going back to back & 3/4 takes major strength. Mentally & physically an excellent team.

Dang, that game would be fun.

Edelman vs. Troy Brown would be a problem for tbe 2004 team.

Marcus Cannon vs Willie/Vrabel/Seymour at times would be a key matchup

Andrews vs. Wilfork would be a big problem for the 2016 team.

I trust Butler/Ryan vs. Branch/Givens

Not sure how our current DL would hold up over the course of a game vs. Dillon
------------------------------

I think it'd be a close game until Dillon wore the 2016 team out if the 2004 team had a lead in the 4th.

Right and you had major talent on IR in Gronk and Ty Law and Ty Poole.

Is Brady better now than he was in 2004? Obviously he has reached his peak simply because of his age but I would say probably yes. Hell he might even be faster now LOL.

Brady is a much more accomplished QB now. I doubt that this version of TB would be owned by anyone.

Brady would be exhausted, playing every snap, changing jerseys....
Then you have Patricia vs. Weiss, Romeo vs McDaniels....

Stats are very similar but let me add a lopsided stat that overwhelmingly favors 2004.
Defensive turnovers:

2004.....36 (20 INTs)
2016......17 (9 INTs)

I rank '04 as NE's most dominant team ever because of their balance, their ability to turn turnovers into points, and a rushing attack that imposed their will on their opponents....especially in the 4th quarter. And despite the 16-0 regular season campaign in 2007, I viewed the 2004 team as the far superior team because of the quality of the total package.

If BB can add quality pieces this off season to deepen this roster....and NE's defense continues to improve now that the core has been established, next year could rival '04. A Jimmy G sale could definitely bolster the ranks with a prime piece or two to push this team forward. In the mean time, this team is still 12-2. How lucky are we?
