2016 COMBINED: Pats Roster Transactions

DEN waived him. He was not on a PS.

His raise was recent as he was on the Pats 53, was waived and signed to the PS and given a bump in pay.

I don't think the Pats had him for three weeks. If they signed him off the PS they would not be allowed to waive him to the PS regardless of what he was paid.

My first reaction was to dislike this move. On the surface, we lose DT depth inorder to give JB 2 weeks more practice experience running the scout team. How does THAT make sense. But when you think about it, it actually means he'll have 6 weeks more (if we are lucky), time and that IS significant.

It also makes it more evident that the Pats plan to move JG if they get a decent offer. I don't think they be so quick to potentially lose Woody Hamilton who did a decent job before he was hurty'; if JB didn't figure big in their future plans.

Yea I think they only had him for a week on the 53 before they cut waived him and signed him to the PS.

Where is this 3 weeks coming from? Is there some kind of rule?

Yes -- if you sign a player off another team's practice squad, they must stay on your roster (and get paid 53-man roster money) for a minimum of 3 weeks. Anyone else -- waiver claims, street FAs, your own PS players -- can be cut as soon as you'd like.

Got it...but he was a FA as DEN cut him so I don't think this rule applies.

I think it is worth having Brissett as the 53rd man for the next 4 weeks +.

Question regarding the 3 week rule for ps players signed by another team: Can ps players no longer be signed off our team because less than 3 weeks remain? If so it makes the timing they used with Brissett much to their advantage as they know who they are currently retaining on the ps can not be pouched by another team.

Having Brissett being active and part of the post-season push, along with prepping for the playoffs and, hopefully, a Superbowl, will be a valuable experience for Brissett for when he goes through it again.

I think Caserio's loosing it. He needs a break. I mean look at this thread!

They had to play with two healthy DTs on the roster after they released Johnson and then one after another Valentine and Hamilton got hurt. For 4-3 defense thats thin in my book ..
But Hamilton has been inactive every game. So he would not play until the game after an injury happened. He can do that from the ps the same as he can do it from the 53.

That is true. But he is not on PS.

They had to pay kilgo that for 3weejs because they signed him off a practice squad

Hi Andy. Kilgo was claimed off waivers from the Broncos rather than signed off their practice squad, so no 3 week rule applies.

He will be

I know there is no way around you but still .. By waiving him they offered him to 31 other teams, many of them already rebuilding so they have less problems with extra roster spot if they see future value (many eliminated teams putting lots of players on IR to make room). He may clear waivers or be claimed with equal possibility at the moment.

In any case the fact is that with releasing him they took the risk of losing a young DT player that looked like he fits their scheme & locker room, that they invested a whole year of coaching etc., were very happy with his progress and very happy with what he showed on the field after VV was injured to offer them a seamless rotation.

On the other hand they obviously liked what they saw in Kilgo so that might be the reason why they took a risk with Hamilton. Seeing Kilgo clearing waivers (having much more experience on the field on top D) maybe encouraged them to go with Hamilton instead of somebody else (Foster and Waddle were less active f.e., Coleman doesn't seem to be part of CB rotation anymore or the future, Richards looks completely expendable - and could go to IR w no risk etc.).

I do believe there is a good chance he clears waivers and comes back but I didn't like the risk.

I see next to no chance he will get claimed. I guess we will see. And if he did he is a JAG and we have another one in the wings

Whatever 4th DT they add they need for short-yardage and goal line.

I suspect they'll add one to the playoff roster so if one goes down, they'll be able to run their 3 DT rotation ok.

they've only been playing 3DTs during games with Flowers and Chris Long standing up inside at times.. Beyond that, the 4th DT has been inactive.

Correct. I think that'll change playoff time.

I have a question about Tre Jackson. Do we know one way or another why he went from PUP to IR? I'm figuring one of two reasons. The obvious one was his knee never recovered. But isn't it equally likely that he was an insurance policy in case someone got hurt. When no one did, they were faced with a choice: put him on IR or activate him and cut someone like Ted Karras and pray he made it to the practice squad. Since the staff seems pretty high on Karras and they probably would have lost him, they just kept him on the 53 roster. This way we don't lose either one.

This is all my wild ass speculation, so I'd be interested in what others think.

My take is that what we are able to think of constitutes a fraction of what they actually consider, so you are probably partly right but there were about 12 other factors and scenarios that influenced the decision.
