Pats claim WR Michael Floyd

I guess he expects him sober on Monday .. unless its a victory Monday of course ..

Great signing, I love it, not only he will help this year (if he scores 1 TD in the playoffs because he was covered by the other teams #3 CB because they were focusing on Edelman/Hogan/Mitchell) he will be already worth the 1.3 million, F that is Kraft's money, he still have a lot in his pocket for siding with scumbagdell.

Not only that but the Pats get's the priority on resigning (on the cheap) a high talented player entering his prime in a position that already is not a huge need is on the verge of a few changes with Edelman getting up there, Amendola hurt and not as productive, Gronk's uncertainty. Mitchell was a good pick and Hogan the best signing in this offseason, Bennett is a huge asset and if we rebuild the offense around those guys adding Floyd, we don't need to spend a pick in a receiver in the next draft, focus on O-line and Defense.

I wanted the Pats to keep Gronk on the roster on the hopes of him being able to play some endzone packages in the SB, apparently that was not possible and Floyd certainly is a big target. Just send him and Hogan run some go routes and defenses will have to pick their poison, you can't cover them and Edelman, Bennet, Lewis/White.

I don't know how this guy made to NE in the waiver wire, it's almost like GM's around the league want the Patriots to win the SB and shove it in Goodell's ass. There's a lot of teams in need of a player with his skillset and even if they weren't it's always nice to have a fast, tall and physical receiver.

As usual, excellent summation. The thing I do not understand is how so many other teams did not claim Floyd. Is it short sightedness on their part? It certainly was not because of a moral issue imo.

I think there are a variety of issues that kept people from putting in a claim on Floyd

- There are only 3 Regular season games left in the season. That doesn't give Floyd much time to learn an offense.
- Floyd is a free agent going into the off-season.
- $1.3M or so for very minimal if any production seems pretty hefty.
- The teams that will be going through coaching changes may not want to bring in a guy who won't want to re-sign if the coach that is here is gone come the start of the new season..
- Of the 12 teams likely to be in the play-offs, how many of them need a WR?

The problem is that it was a mistake that could have cost somebody there life and that is unforgivable. A very selfish and inconsiderate decision. He is fortunate that he is not doing any jail time. Drink drivers are very very dangerous to public safety.

Him being addicted to it is HIS problem. Nobody held a gun to his head and said drink it. Alcohol is poison and should be avoided at all costs. I have seen it destroy families and that is why I never have and never will drink it. Damaging your body and paying for it at the same time lol how intelligent, not to mention how vulnerable you are when you are drunk. I hate this signing. We had big vince leave pulling people from car wrecks and now we got this punk passed out drunk on the intersection with the engine running being a huge threat to public safety... absolute madness. The cops should gave got him out of the car and beat his ass for being an ass or I hope they did.
Most of us have seen the horrific, damaging affects of alcohol abuse on familes. I know I have. It's obvious you have, also. However, addiction is a disease and, as such, isn't entirely a path that an addict chooses. Floyd needs treatment, structure and a solid plan for recovery. Your contention that his addiction is (entirely) his problem/fault is incorrect. I'm not absolving him of blame, but addiction is much more complex than pinning it on one cause or factor. There are other contributing factors such as environment, education, the way one is raised and nurtured and, perhaps most significantly, genetics. As a life-long Pats fans for nearly 60 years, I hope Floyd becomes a successful and contributing player for us. But, my larger hope as a human being is that he gets the necessary treatment and support and recovers.

Yea this pretty much sums it up.

I've been thinking about this but more specifically in the AFC.

If I'm a team like KC, Pitt, BAL, MIA, TN, HOU or even Indy and I'm in the same conference as NE, I KNOW for a fact I will need to score 28 or more points to win a playoff game vs them. Why would I not roll the dice and sign this guy? If you look at all of those teams at WR2 and WR3, Floyd is an upgrade. He may not be a big upgrade for some of them but an upgrade nonetheless

Are they more concerned about the $1.3m than beating NE in the playoffs?

Do they think their system is too complicated?

Do they think he'll be destructive?

IMO these teams are being too conservative and its gonna bite them in the ass.

Also, I did not have time to read through the whole thread, but are others worried that if the guy shows anything (or maybe even if he doesn't) that Fraudger Badell will immediately swoop in and suspend him, because he can, and especially since the guy ended up with the Pats?

Well, first of all you're taking my response to a comment that incorrectly claimed 2x "there are zero salary cap implications" and spinning it into something different, but that's fine. The point was to state how much Floyd is going to cost, and I think you're overstating the supposed "insignificance" of 1.3m dollars.

But let's run with where you're going for the appreciation of debate--There are a couple of solid reasons why it being week 15 has nothing to do with anything. First off, they normally carry space into next season since it's been an option, so it's not as if it magically disappears at the end of the season. I doubt that Belichick changes his value system based on whether or not it's snowing outside. Floyd at 1.3m dollars for a few late season games where he'll almost certainly be inactive this week and next isn't good value, but if they like what they see and can reach a reasonable extension on a former first-round talent, all the better.

Perhaps he can contribute as a red zone threat/possession receiver in a limited role by the time the postseason rolls around, but I'm thinking that Belichick sees this as an opportunity for a nice "one year prove it deal" at a reasonable cost for 2017.

I think there is a limit to how much cap $$ you can roll over into the following year. I forgot what that total was, I thought it was like $6-9 million but I forget.. Like if a team had 20 million in cap space this year, they can't roll all 20 million into next year

The Patriots were like $15 million over the cap before claiming him so I'm not sure if Floyds salary will have any impact on them for next year unless they resign/extend him but I'd look to @Miguel or someone to confirm that

No
"Q: How much cap space do the Patriots now have?
A: $6,368,919 - See more at: Patriots Salary Cap

Well the last Cardinals 1st rounder that the Pats tried to salvage didn't work, maybe this time the results will be better.

I really wish Cooper had worked out. He;'s starting now, and has the kind of physicality that would work well with what Scar is doing - he's like a bigger Mason. Injury timing and numbers lost that one. If he's not extended in Cleveland, I hope the Pats can give him another look.

I'm just gonna leave this right here.

JAX carried over 32m from last year. There is no limit per se however teams must spend up to 89% of the cap and must spend 95% over a 4 year period.

Sounds like the Pats had more than just Weis with some good G2.

Mike Reiss ESPN Staff Writer
Patriots CB Logan Ryan says he trained with WR Michael Floyd in Phoenix for the last few offseasons and is excited to welcome him to the team. "He's a good guy. I'm sure he's hungry for a second chance," he says.
WOW Here we have Mike Reiss actually doing his job and getting information for the public while the rest of his cohorts just sit back and do nothiong but pontificate their own opinions like the gods they THINK they are. Thank the real god (whomever that may be) that we have at least one reporter worthy of that name.

I'm assuming he'll stay away from the wet bar in the hotel room.

I'm actually shocked the Titans didn't pick him up. I would have thought that would have been a no-brainer for them but I guess not.
Again, I assume that they thought he'd clear waivers, or maybe they didn't have $1.4MM to sign him.

Most people thought he'd clear waivers (including me), but most of those same people thought there would be a lot of interest in him AFTER he got through them. And he did clear 31 teams.
