Report: surgery for Gronk

So if hes having the surgery tomorrow that'll make 1/27/2017 exactly 8 weeks.

Super Bowl is Feb 5th.

Hmmmm.

Oh yea when he never put down a wheelbarrow full of loam and moved a rake around.

No, but he did put down Beastmode at the goal-line.

My friend of a similar age and circumstances had a (mild) heart attack and his therapy was getting into a swimming pool with two smoking hot therapists. Strange how these things work, eh?

Well, can't get a better test of the ticker is ok than that.

Its a incomprehensible level of pain tolerance. I'm sure they gave him something.

When I did it, it hurt, but I kept going. Thought I just pulled a muscle. Had a couple of scotches and went to bed.

Woke up at 3am and thought I was going to die.

I'm sure you appreciate the enormous uncertainty in such estimates. The first clue will be whether or not BB puts him on IR this week. If not, there will be constant reevaluation and the longer we go the better the odds. Still, he would not be in football shape, and I would not bet on it. But Gronk is an irreplaceable difference maker, so if there is even a small chance of returning, I would guess Bill would preserve the option as long as time (and injuries elsewhere) permits.

Very sucky news in every way. But the Pats are more prepared for this kind of thing than they ever have been before.

1. Blount has run the ball very well this year and they may need more reliance on the running game.

2. The emergence of White and the return of Lewis. They could run a lot of "pony" formations with both those RBs in the mix, and other teams simply have a hard time dealing with both of them.

3. The fact that the Pats still have Bennett. He's one of the best TEs in football, and while it's always better to have both Gronk and MB, it's still nice to have a pro bowl caliber TE on the field, even if you can't have two of them.

4. Malcolm Mitchell. The Pats have four legit NFL wide receivers that they can throw out there now. They could go completely spread with Lewis in the backfield. Most teams simply don't have the quality of DBs to handle five players like Edelman, Hogan, Mitchell, Amendola, and Lewis.

So does this make things harder? Absolutely. Does this automatically kill the season? No, for the first time in years, I don't think it does.

#4 sounds great.

Make the defense cover 5 guys that can catch the ball and have good YAC stats

I wonder if this is football ready or not? Reminds me of the broken arm and Dr Gill rushing him back

The question now is Bennett's ankle. Would resting it a couple of weeks heal it? Or is it going to be nagging for the rest of the year?

The good news is, even without Gronk, I don't think there's an AFC team that scares me in Foxboro in the playoffs.

The better news is, we won't be going to Denver, certainly - if they make the playoffs, it's almost certainly as a wildcard team.

Houston stinks, the Ravens aren't nearly as good as their record would indicate...which leaves KC, Oakland, and maybe Denver or Miami.

Pats are still my favorite to go to the Superbowl.

pats need to win their home games first . then worry how the chips may fall. their two losses are at home. If we get the next 2 games, we might feel better about the bye . Then lets see what happens in denver .

well at this point every game matters. HFA

no more crying about if Brady should play this weekend...

This about sums it up.

Besides with the return of Lewis and the emergence of Mitchell, the scheme possibilities really are huge and have the added advantage no real tape on what's possible.

Frankly, the coming weeks should be very interesting from an offensive game plan perspective.

Yep, I alluded to that earlier. We don't know anything yet (and most probably never will) in terms of specifics of the surgery. Just because his timetable to be back in a football game is ~8 weeks it doesn't mean that if everything goes smooth he wouldn't be able to return to the practice field for slow conditioning work/non-contact activity already around the end of the regular season.

Just to enrage some of our resident Dr. Chao haters:

Which kinda lines up with the hope of having him back in no-contact drills around the end of Week 17.

A huge loss, nobody would deny that. Even without Gronk, I like our chances in the AFC, we still have the best QB and the best coach so although it's a huge loss, I'd still rather be us than anybody else.

I would prefer Brady sit because a healthy JG is certainly capable of beating the Rams and could be better than a hobbled Brady.

i dont know if team gronk will take the risk. recovering from surgery and recovering to play football are two different things. i wont blame them either.

I agree. There is no part of me that will be angry if they just close the book on Gronk's 2016 and move on with the big picture in mind.
