Report: surgery for Gronk

Not to mention Gronk could have sustained that injury on any route in the route tree as opposed to just the 9 and 8 routes.

He could have injured it getting out of bed also. But the odds would have been lower.

Falling full speed for a great, but clumsy athlete (as Herm Edeards put the other day - yes, insert Herm joke here - but he was right - Gronk has never known HOW to fall and a long fly pattern when he is compensating coming back from an injury is playing with long odds).

It's at times like this that this place strongly resembles the world's largest f###### nursery. And I'm not talking about the type where plants are nurtured and grown. JFChrist...

Regarding the deep pattern, no catch layout by Gronk vs the NYJ....if memory serves me, Gronk's defender purposely (IMO) landed hard on Gronk's back as his body was extended on the ground and prone. At the time, I said to my TV...that was a bullsh*t dirty play by a dirtbag JEST DB.

He didn't lay out for it for a reason - - he physically couldn't. He was limited and they threw him into a situation he should never have been in.

Watch the play in slo-mo from the approaching EZ view - - he pulls back his arms before even trying to fully extend. He physically couldn't do it. He hurt the back even before he went down - - you can see the wince on his face. Hitting the deck only worsened it.

It's plain as day. Watch at the 1:10 mark: Look at his face as he brings his arms back in quickly. He hurt his back before he hit the ground. Hitting the ground at that speed only compounded it. Mind you, this is not a guy known for "turtle arms".

Or during an inline block, wham block or he could have slid on the sideline going to the locker room at half time.

I've been told by everyone the defense is amazing. That means they should have no problem going back to the Super Bowl then

Not only is Gronk going to go full speed on routes 1-7 as well, but he also has GREATER chance of sustaining big hits on those routes (ala the Thomas hit) which could cause the same or greater injury. Blaming the injury on Gronk running the 9 route in particular is about as brain dead as it gets.

contact sports and (multiple) back surgeries do not mix

And there are players who played long careers with multiple back surgeries. Hell, Peyton Manning played at a high level for a year or two after his fifth neck surgery.

Oh, good, he was cleared by the Patriots medical staff, that's everything. They have a tremendous record!

Once again, an injury to one part of the body can create overcompensation issues for an athlete. Happens alot with pitchers injuring their throwing out their arms after having leg injuries. Happens all the time.
Do you seriously think only pats doctors cleared him and team gronk had no say in this after the 2012 fiasco ? If you feel better blaming someone e.g pats then go for it. This could've happened 2 weeks from vs denver too. There is no difference. Its not like he had knee issues and they asked him go run routes in the middle of the field or block 300lb lineman

At least we kept AJ Derby around in case of an injury to one of the starters.

I wouldn't put a whole lot in the eight weeks thing. I willing to bet, based on experience, that the time line for determining a return at this point is pure guess work. Could be 3 weeks or could be months...no one knows for sure. Reporting a return time at this point is irresponsible and stupid.

Im sure the Pats will lose some production but I also believe they will adjust the entire offense now, that may be the worst thing for opponents...we have good players available.

he's done for the year.

well HGH is one hell of a drug....and i am ALL for gronk using that to come back BTW

Patriots' offense must re-invent itself without Rob Gronkowski

Consider that entering their Oct. 20 game at San Francisco (in which Gronkowski did not play), the Patriots had run 245 plays with two or more tight ends on the field, which was the second highest total in the NFL. At that point, Patriots tight ends led the NFL in receiving yards (1,044) and were tied for second in receiving touchdowns (seven).
impressive numbers!

Anybody got info on comparable injuries and return times?

I agree.. that's why I think that they will keep him on the 53 until the end of regular season/playoff BYE week which is when there will be a pretty clear picture.

Unless it's already decided to not even attempt it and call it a season.

The team will be OK. They've won without Gronk in the past, they will do so again. It'll just be more difficult for us, and easier for defenses to key on MB. Be prepared to hear a lot of "#71 reporting as eligible" during the upcoming weeks.

Derby gave BB no reason to keep around. His blocking was awful and his alligator armed a few throws.
Compared to the legendary Matt Lengel?

NFL.COM: Matt Lengel

This is terrible. But if there was any season where the offense was set up to handle the loss, it would be this year. I'm not just talking about Bennett, but also the addition of better WR's, plus Dion.
Dion's injury history is a concern, IMHO. However, just like Gronk, you can't predict when and how an injury will come up, and if he's on the roster you play him.

Oh my f**cking word the AJ Derby **** is starting. Guy has caught 6 passes since being traded. Don't mention pre season games to me because Brian Tyms looked like an elite WR in pre season. There is a reason why Derby got shipped out and it wasn't just so Belichick could get a 5th round pick. If Derby showed any type of promise when the regular season started he wouldn't have been shipped out. Derby essentially had 4 weeks at the beginning of the season to show something and he obviously didn't
Time will tell if it turns out to have been a hasty decision or not. Personally I'm thinking BB wishes he'd found a way to keep him around right about now. A platoon of AJD on passing downs and Fleming on rushing downs seems to me to be better than lots of Matt Lengel with zero NFL catches.

The A.J. Derby fan club is weeping.
Guilty as charged.

Why on earth would they use IR return designation on Jacoby Brisett????
Because as of yesterday they thought Gronk's injury was minor.

I agree with you. He looked extremely tentative going for the ball on that play and the impact he took on the way down didn't look bad at all. I was really surprised to see him get up so slowly when it happened but I figured the lung was still an issue. I think everyone did.

I'm guessing he blew out the disc lifting sometime between the Seattle game and the jets game.

The Ravens and Broncos games are definitely two losses now. Better hope Oakland and Denver drop a few more .

Clear question: Can we get to the SB without China Doll and what are the chances in those games? How does Bennett stack up against Denver, KC, Oakland, Ravens, Steelers TE's?

Who described the defense to you as," amazing?" Don't seem to recall anyone being that overwhelmingly complimentary...
