Fellers,
What this says to me is that these players understand that there is more here than just cash. There really are intangibles that go with any job, and football is no different.
Here, in New England, they have a top-tier franchise that consistently wins. Yes, they got knocked out by Indy, but they are always in the mix, always considered a threat to take it all. That means a lot to folks.
You think Ty Law might not be thinking about what he left here after his time with the Jets and Chiefs? The cash is nice, but his chances for the HOF took a nosedive after he left here. Even if his stats had dropped, he still would've had the residual effect of being with a winning franchise.
Ah well. This is a really smart move by the front office. Having thise 3 signed and onboard means less worries for the next year or two, means they can groom folks to take over down the pike, and lets them work on being an even more effective front 3, and that's a darned scary thought.
Lastly, this sort of a deal is just as much a respect for being treated fairly and honestly by the management. Many a free agent has signed here for less because of the candid and honest example of the coach. He doesn't mince words, doesn't make promises he can't keep, and lays it out, square and up front with the player. Who wouldn't feel good about that?
Respects,
