Curran: Multi-layer issues for patriots defense

I have been saying the Pats defense has sucked this whole year. This whole bend but dont break BS is BS why would you design a defensive scheme that always comes down to a 3rd down play at the 10 yard line... I don't think you would.

Yup. I can't get into their mindset. If they are gonna let them score, let them score quick and get the ball back to the O.

They need to play press man, and cover a bit longer to let a pass rush develop.

Oh and not recognizing the HB leaking out and give up a big play time and time again needs to stop. Football is pretty simple, and if you just listen to the coaches you will be fine.

They aren't listening.

Anyone who has been honest with themselves this season knew that this defense was vulnerable. It certainly isn't close to the 2014/2015 squad. I'd say this defense is falling to the level of 2011/2012. It's a shame. We spent all those years trying to build a home grown defense and it was removed just as it got good.

I understand contracts and what not but we kicked Easley and Collins to the curb and traded Jones for what looks to be turning out to be nothing. There's no doubt we are feeling their absence big time.
Easley was never a factor in our defense's successes. He's just not very good I don't understand why his name is brought up as a key loss.

Joe Thuney alone is far more than nothing.

Big drop off on D since 2014 without Revis-Browner-Wilfork-Jones-Collins. Of course Revis isn't the same player but he was good in 2014 and no one really replaced him.

yall can copy, paste, and quote this to Feb and back...

but im going to have some great fun in the offseason going through these posts about horrible D and horrible team when we're SB champs

Horrible defense has ruined our season many many times before. Good offense and this defense can't stop a nose bleed

Are you seriously positioning that Malcolm Butler isn't a #1CB by league standards?

I think he's more then capable but is he a shutdown corner where you can leave him in an island?

Well I hope your right but there is less than a 30% chance we knock off 3 teams in a row with a secondary that you can pass on at will. Any good QB will look like Tom Brady against us.

I am holding out hope that they will perform better in the secondary in the next month and a half and into Jan and hopefully Feb...

I wanna see more trey flowers and i wanna see malcom brown actually be more of a factor inside. More press coverage

You don't want to base your defense around turnovers. Yes, sometimes you can "create" them, but most times it's very fluky.

I agree with both. Flowers looked like the best outside rusher we have on Sunday night. Even when he wasn't sacking Wilson he was still creating disruption. I'm going to be more cautious with my expectations for him as a full-time player, considering I thought the same thing about Sheard last season and am incredibly disappointed with what I've seen from him as a full-time player to this point. Nonetheless, Flowers looks damn good.

Malcolm Brown? I thought we'd see more. He was so disruptive on all three downs late last season. It took him a while to get going, but he was really really good once he did get into gear. Maybe that will happen again this year. He stood out on a few plays Sunday night, but he has been almost invisible for the majority of the season outside of a few plays here and there. Sophomore slump? Who knows? He's a good player and great teammate by all accounts. He is smart too, as many players have said they actually go to him with questions. So I'm hoping he's going to pick things up down the stretch like last year.

The whole front seven, minus a very productive Branch and High has been mostly disappointing. Ninko seems to finally be getting his legs, so we'll see what he looks like as the second half progresses. The D has to be better than this. The talent is there mostly. But what we're seeing was forecasted. It's one thing when you can't stop third down or create turnovers early in the season when everyone is pretty much trying to figure things out. It's another thing entirely when it's later in the season and you're starting to see the good teams separate. Come playoff time, you're playing mostly the best the game has to offer. Stats go out the window, even the defensive PPG allowed that we all love, and you simply have to make plays. We don't seem to have the D that can overcome two 14-point deficits in a playoff game or a 10-point deficit heading into the 4th quarter of a SB, both which had never been done in league history. So the team simply must find a way to play better. Brady is the GOAT, but the GOAT is soon 40. I don't think it's fair to expect him to carry the load like years past, even though he still shows the capability to do so.

The biggest problem with the Pat's defense is their complete lack of playmakers, or the fact they they are currently playing formCleveland and Arizona. IF you don't have to worry about Chandler Jones strip sack, or Jamie Collins blitzing unblocked, then it is much easier just to block everyone else. Think about it this way, would you worry about Demarcus Ware, if Von Miller wasn't on the other side? Miller was invisible a few years ago, it's only now, that he has other playmakers on his defense, that teams just can't double and triple team him.

Everyone on the Pat's defense was better because teams had to account for Collins and Jines, without them, who scares you? Do you really think anyone is worried about Flowers, Or Sheard?

Hightower is still a great talent, but now, he can't blitz, he has to be the mainstay in the middle.

Butler is great, but the rest of the secondary is total garbage, including the leagues most overpaid invisible safety . If the Seahawks can run roughshod over this defense with thier 2 cent offensive line and a rookie safety turned WR turned RB and a mobile QB who breaks out of the pocket and lobs 30 yard completions. Just imagine what the Cowboys would do to the Pat's? They have a great offensive line, a great RB, an all pro TE and a big fast strong tall WR, and an Edelman clone!

The bottonline is you can't replace impact playmakers with JAGS and expect to win, it's just not going to happen. Sure you can beat the Jets, but you are not beating anyone else.

BB blew it when he traded away Jones and Collins. They used to have Jones, Collins, Hightower, Talib and or Revis. Now they have Hightower (period). It's just not enough playmakers, they are getting run over, passed over, and their leading interceptor is in Cleveland.

Objective people have been saying the defense is schitt since the second half vs Miami. Opposing receivers are constantly wide open. There's no pass rush.
They've been winning games since that "holy crap, this defense really does suck" moment vs Tannehill because the offense has been able to put up 27, 33, 35, 27, 41...and then vs Seattle they score 24 and lose.
The fanboys have been screaming about points allowed. PPG is an awesome stat when you're stopping teams, making them go three and out, making them have 1 or 2 minute possessions, and causing turnovers....but this Pats defense is letting opponents eat up 4 and 5 minute chunks of clock each possession.
We're 9 games into the season and I can only think of two "big plays" from the D - the Hightower safety vs Cin and the Jamie Collins pick vs Hou. Other than those two plays this D has been a whole lot of vanilla.
