I don't see how this doesn't lock up the Super Bowl.
No I think Mingo with get first shot at taking Collins' latest role as the 2nd or 3rd down move LB, with Roberts getting the first down and running situation snaps. Van Noy can earn his stripes on ST's like everyone else, while he learns the DWe have been kinda missing the blocking specialist TE since Michael Williams got hurt I guess, maybe the hope is that he'll fill that role. Seems like the Van Noy trade fills Collins' spot in the LB rotation, while this was to fill Derby's spot in the TE rotation.
I will miss him.Sure they will. They need to sign a player to the PS to replace Spanky, Stinky or whatever the hell his name is.
The gameday thread will light up way before we give up any points. It'll light up the moment we allow the very first 3rd down conversion.
imma bet you its after we allow the first 1st down, regardless what down it is when they get it

You got me thinking about the LB core and what we all felt at the start of the season. To be clear, I don't think Van Noy will be the guy who's taking Collins role. I agree that it'll primarily go to some combination of Mingo and Roberts. More that Van Noy will be taking over the spot that Collins has vacated in the LB rotation at large. He'll become LB4, while Mingo becomes LB3 (from LB4) and Roberts becomes LB2 (from LB3), though obviously not that straightforward since their roles will vary significantly by situation and matchup.
So pretty much what you said - Roberts and Mingo move up, and Van Noy slides into the back end of the rotation where Mingo was previously.
You got me thinking about the LB core and what we all felt at the start of the season.
We all felt that Hightower and Collins could be the best pair of LB's in the league, but AFTER that, it got bad pretty quickly. Mingo and McClellan were possibles but question marks, and Freeney was a known negative none of us wanted to see in the lineup.
After watching Mingo for a bit in limited snaps, I feel better about him, even knowing his limitations. I think he'll be a success here because they will put him into better situations where he can succeed. McClellan hasn't stood out but I don't think he's played any worse than Freeney. Roberts has been both a dramatic find and revelation. He and Tuney are clearly the 2 most impactful draft picks so far. I really don't think we will see any loss in the run game with him in their instead of Collins....and perhaps even a slight improvement. The issue will be in pass defense. Mingo clearly has his speed, and his 3 cone was DB good. Let's see if the Pats can coach him up to be a plus in that aspect of the game. Plus the development of Flowers, and the addition of Van Noy, could allow Ninko to get more run at LB if it comes to it.
So after all the questions, even AFTER losing Collins, I feel better about the LB group as a whole than I did before the season when I thought it was really bad after the top 2. Now we may not be as talented at the top, but we are deeper throughout.
