"Chris Hogan has been absurdly efficient on deep routes"

Didn't someone point out that his measurables are comparable to DeAndre Hopkins, or was that just a sexy dream I had?

You're not wrong:

Height: 6011
Weight: 221
40 Yrd Dash: 4.50
20 Yrd Dash: 2.63
10 Yrd Dash: 1.57
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 28
Vertical Jump: 36 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'06"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.15
3-Cone Drill: 6.75

Height: 6010
Weight: 214
40 Yrd Dash: 4.57
20 Yrd Dash: 2.69
10 Yrd Dash: 1.62
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 15
Vertical Jump: 36
Broad Jump: 09'07"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.50
3-Cone Drill: 6.83

So he's not just comparable to Hopkins; he actually tests better in every single mark, while weighing in heavier.

Whitey Moss

Hes not a speed merchant but he does two things pretty damn well it seems to me.

Doesn't allow the DB to physically muscle him around in the first 15 yards. Thats due to his size and strength.

Runs good fakes and gets the DB to bite.

I'm glad hes here.
He IS a speed merchant. He had the fastest time in the 40 at the combine the year he was drafted

What a difference having a receiver capable of threatening the middle-deep makes...
It should also put Brady's deep ball critics since 2007 to rest.

All I see is the 4.47 he ran for his pro day at Fordham.

These pro day and combine numbers are good for comparing where two guys were at the beginning of their careers, in terms of measurables, but they don't mean much now.

he wasn't invited to the combine, but he would have beat every WR since 2006 in the bench press:

hogan was a UFA. in 2011, his 40 time would have been 12th fastest.

.

Falling is one of the few areas I can hang with Brady. Always been really good at that.

I'm not. I trip over the dog and fall like a sack of potatoes. You'd think I was blown up by Hightower and Wilfork.

Speed of course is necessary ...
Hogan has the ability to track the balls down which not all deep receivers have.

Some of them just run and expect the ball to be there ... they cannot look over their shoulder as they run ... it alters their speed ... Hogan can look over his shoulder and maintain his pace ... he was a very good pickup.

Exactly . My nephew who is the most uncoordinated kid on the planet does a better job of tracking ball in the air than Matthew Slater

it takes good hand-eye coordination as well, and apparently hogan has that in spades. from another masslive article a few weeks ago:

New England Patriots WR Chris Hogan is a freak athlete

As you probably know, Hogan was a college lacrosse player at Penn State (music to Bill Belichick's ears) before he played a year of football — on both sides of the ball — at Monmouth. And before that, Hogan starred at Ramapo high school in northern New Jersey, where he played receiver, cornerback and, according to coach Drew Gibbs, was an "amazing, amazing left-footed punter" (which is basically Bon Jovi to Belichick's ears).

"I saw him punt last week or so," Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said. "And he punted the sh-- out of the ball."

Garoppolo says he has not yet seen Hogan throw the ball. Maybe he has and does not want to leak the potential for a trick play, because anybody who watched Hogan warm up with Amendola in Cleveland would agree: The guy can sling it.

If the Pats held a punt-pass-kick-sprint-lift-golf competition, Hogan would be the heavy favorite.

"I went bowling with Chris one time and he made me want to cry because he talked so much sh--," Guadango said.

Also: "Play wiffle ball with him, as stupid as it sounds, he just barrels up the ball," Guadango said. "I had a former big league pitcher throwing, and he sh-- on us."

During his offseason with the Dolphins, in the spring of 2012, Hogan took up golfing. He lived across the street from the Bonaventure Golf Club in Weston, Fla., and he'd regularly wander over with a few teammates.

"He didn't even golf a lot," said former Dolphins offensive lineman Will Yeatman. "He just crushes the ball. And crushes it straight, too."

The group also played the Grande Oaks Golf Club, the site at which Caddyshack was filmed. At Grande Oaks, there was a drivable par 4. Hogan used to send it to the green off the tee, and finish with a long put for eagle.

"We kind of tagged him as that guy that's good at everything — it doesn't matter if he's done it before or not," said Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore. "He's kind of got it."

Yeah, I don't think it's hyperbole at all to just state that Chris Hogan is more athletic than DeAndre Hopkins, the eye test supports that too. Hopkins is a really good player who in some ways succeeds despite his lack of top-tier athleticism, while Hogan is a superior athlete who's spent the past few years learning on the fly how to be a receiver.

Hopkins is a much better and more technically refined player, shown by his impeccable hands, how he works the sideline, his route-running and his skill at high-pointing the ball and making contested catches. Hogan doesn't measure up at all in these kinds of technical skills, which is to be expected considering that he's only really been playing football for a few years. But he does make up a bit of the gap by being the superior athlete, and the skill is coming along pretty well considering how little he's played the position. I'd be surprised if he ever gets to Hopkins' level, but I could see him continuing to improve as a receiver for the next couple years even as he exits his physical prime.
