If Maroney goes down, are the Pats done?

From what I read the only way Corey would come back this year is if the Patriots were at 4th and 1 at the goal line in the Superbowl.

He also said he would have loved to play with Moss.
I'd call that leaving the door slightly open. No?

I dunno.. I don't think so.

The quote was something to the effect of him wishing he "could have" played with Moss, but that it was a year too late. Or something like that. After reading the article I got the concrete impression that Corey Dillon was done playing football. But that was just me, who knows what could happen in the span of two or three months.

Kevin Faulk and Sammy Morris are more than adequate to fill in if Maroney goes down.

Faulk ran the ball well behind this OL last season. 4.9 ypc. In fact, towards the end of the season and into the post season, I thought that - in an admittedly limited role - he looked more comfortable running the ball than either Dillon or Maroney....

What more do people want? I really don't get the "if _____ goes down are, are we screwed?!?" stuff. Of course the starter is better than the reserve. Of course the backup isn't going to be a Pro Bowler. All you can ask for is adequate depth, which we have at the RB position.

If Coach Belichick goes down, are we screwed?!?

no were not done. we can just spread it out and pass all day and Morris/Faulk isnt bad as u make it seem. Morris filled in very well for Brown last year and did better behind a bad OL

Ummmm..Can you say Montana's backup Young was one of those rare guys that was just as good as the lead QB in the late stages in Montana's career at SF.

Steve Young IMO was the greatest Backup QB in NFL history to ever sit on the sidelines and have an equal or even better QB playing..That was very rare.

Yup, they might as well pack it in and cancel the season.

See under Seau, J. ...

I must say, Maroney's health really worries me.

If he goes down for an extended period of time, then the likely candidates to fill the void are Faulk, Morris & Evans.

Evans and Faulk are clearly not 3 down backs, or even 2 down backs, and Morris is average at best, and would be a poor starting RB.

Having so many weapons in the receiving core, WR & TE, should make for an easier haul in the middle against many 6 & 7 men in the box schemes. However, without a decent back even Kyle Brady's immortal blocking won't help Morris get more than 5 yards per carry.

This team has very few holes, I would hate it if we lost the opportunity for immortality due to a freak injury to Maroney, or a recurring shoulder problem.

If we get to pass-happy we will get killed in the playoffs.

Don't most teams have some young buck RB's hanging around? I know Hairston was IR'd, but we should pick up a UDFA and put him on the practice squad, IMO.

I think Sammy Morris would be able to carry the load should something happen to Maroney....however, if both Maroney and Morris are unavailable I would be worried. Faulk as always, is fumble prone. Neither Evans or Faulk can carry the running workload.....as a matter of fact I am kind of surprised that Evans is still on this team in all honesty.....while he can provide some great blocking ability.....I would much rather have Patrick Pass back....ONE man's opinion....GO PATS!!!

The RB situation has always been the most serious weakness on this Patriot team. Maroney has not shown durability even in a "share the carries" workload.

But....Morris is a workable backup and I like Evans for some downs also. If (when) Maroney goes out with an injury I feel kinda confident that the Pats can continue with a backfield of Morris/Evans/Faulk, but they will rely on the pass and screens mostly.

As was previously stated, we won with Antwoine Smith, so anything is possible this year. Heck....maybe Vrabel can fill in for a bit.

This is the one area I wish they had addressed in the draft.

Sorry, but I really feel that you under-estimate the ability of Sammy Morris. To say that he is "average at best" is a stretch of immense proportions.

No. Faulk & Morris both looked very good in tonights game. We would be quite alright. And lets not forget 2005. We went 10-6 with an injured Corey.

If Maroney goes down, I expect to see #80 running the ball.

Why not?

You mean Bob? Wait. That's spelled differently. Seriously, though it would be a step back but I think if they went "pass happy" and the defense loaded up for it then the run would open up.

Matt...........

Can't believe that Dillon would be on Pioli's speed dial.

Opposing defensive players used to joke about Dillon last year.

Not about his speed, which anyone could see was lacking, but rather that when he got into space he ran towards the sideline to avoid contact.

I repeat: Defenders laughed watching tape of Dillon desperately trying to avoid contact by running OUT OF BOUNDS.

He may have been playing hurt, but it doesn't surprise me at all that he hasn't been picked up.

I assume the original draft of this post was written in crayon.:bricks:

Quinton Smith.

Just got a feeling about this guy.

Or whatever running back types are available on the wire. I have a hard time worrying about Brady being limited to the 28 receivers and three veteran backs we have besides Maroney.

Why not let the first round pick earn his stripes and take a chill pill. There's more to the game than offense anyway.
