Crafting an extension with Martellus Bennett

Miquel,

If you were the Pats and were trying to keep both Brady and Polo for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, how would you structure a competitive contract offer to Polo and keep the CAP reasonable on 2018? What combo of signing roster bonuses and salary and contract duration would you propose. How much would they likely have to guarantee? What might you propose to Brady?

You are a great Pats fan and an irreplaceable asset. Kraft should put you on the payroll.

I'm interested in hearing Miguel's thoughts on the matter since he is the expert, but I don't think they can get Brady's numbers down any more without extending him and kicking the can down the road again. Obviously, a Brady extension defeats the purpose of extending JG, unless there's a way they can do it with an eye on the future for potential trade purposes. I don't even know if that's a possibility and am likely embarrassing myself just by pondering the idea.

I have spoken of a 1 year transitional period for 2018 where Brady plays 2016, 2017, and 2018. Obviously, you'd have to either reach a long-term extension with JG or franchise him for 2018 since he'll be a free agent. Even this 1 year suggestion seems a bit fantastical for a guy like Belichick, but it will all depend on his opinion as to whether JG may be the future of the franchise or not. The one year transitional period would also mean that Brady would be okay with either retiring or being traded, so that's an awfully big assumption in itself.

Totally agree on the idea of the organization putting him on the payroll. I started to listen to Miguel on the recent podcast last evening but have not finished as of yet. He's just so damn knowledgeable.

I'd hate to see the Pats treat Bennett like a rent-a-player. He's out performing Gronk right now.

Does saying yes to signing Bennett also include extending Collins, Butler etc...?

I don't see why not, team will have like 70 million in cap space next season.

I do think that it's entirely possible to keep Brady through 2018, and use the Franchise tag on Alladin. If they have to use it. It's possible that they can extend him with a lower salary but guarantee it. That gives him some insurance that he'd be sticking around.

Who knows? If Brady wins another ring, he might well decide to retire. He probably won't, but you just never know.

This team has alot of key free agents after this season. Is malcolm butler worth 10 million a year? Jamie Collins and hightower. They will have cap space but it would be nice to clear some more.

That's partly because defenses are trying to stop the devil they know.

Butler is a RESTRICTED free agent. We will extend him or get a 1st as compensation.

Do you see them letting go of anyone?
I don't know what you are asking. Letting go? who?

Obviously, there will be players who will go other teams because the highest agreed on contract wasn't enough to keep the player.

....assuming that is what they tender him at.

Stop calling him Polo! Nobody else calls him that! We can't have people using their own nicknames, it'll be anarchy!

Must pay:
Collins
DH
Butler
Sheard (IMO)

Also if we can get Bennett as well...good god that would be amazing

If Bennett keeps playing like this I would add him to that list.

Hell. Just add him now.

What makes you think Garopollo would agree to a deal where he stays on the bench behind Brady with some kind of team friendly deal?

NFL careers are short. If I were him I'd accept nothing less than starters money AND the starting job.

He will want 10+ a year..what the top TEs are making..aka paying gronk or extending Gronk to that as well....two TEs at 10+ mill? That's tough

Is that based on anything? This guy doesn't strike me as a self centered *****.

I thought Miguel's proposal for 7 mil APY seemed reasonable and aftr what Bennett's been through, playing for Dallas and Chicago, he's going to want to say here IMO.

For that reason, I think there's no way he'll ask to be paid 10 mil which is more than Gronks deal btw.

If Bennett opens his contract negotiations with the pats That high, everyone in the room would take that kind of ask as a non starter walk away.
