While following the Revis thread here I ran across a website I hadn't known about -- spotrac.com. One of the things they do is track NFL contract & cap info. I do not know how accurate they are.
An interesting page there is the "career cash earnings" page for player. For example, here's Brady's:
Tom Brady
I'm amused by the $10,663 he was reportedly paid in "incentives" in 2015. Anyone know what that was?
Anyhow, his totals are $191,554,868 in 17 seasons or a career average of $11,267,993 per season, which of course is dragged down by his original rookie deal.
Out of curiosity I looked at Goober's page at Peyton Manning
His totals were $248,732,000 in 18 seasons or a career average of $13,818,444 per season.
Since Brady was (mostly) a nobody out of college and Goober was a big name their rookie deals were obviously very different. So for the heck of it, I decided to throw out the first two years of each of their data (both players restructured in their 3rd season). From the 3rd season on the cash totals are:
Brady: $191,025,368 in 15 seasons = $12,735,024 average per season
Goober: $234,558,000 in 16 seasons = $14,659,875 average per season
So on an average cash basis Brady earned 13% less than Goober.
However...
If you want to compare the period where both players were big names playing on big name contracts, then look at Goober's entire career vs leaving off Brady's first two seasons.
Then you get Brady at $12,735,024 and Goober at $13,181,444 which has "Big Name Era" Brady being paid only 3.4% less than "Big Name Era" Goober. So contrary to the mythos, Big Name Era Brady actually did get paid almost as much as Big Name Era Goober. Though Big Name Era Brady delivered the far better returns, of course!
