Eric Rowe

CB's deep this year so I'd think he'd be used in a Chung-type role. Better optiom here than Richards, although Rowe has more coverage flexibility in that he can play deep centerfield.

Yep on both counts. I was just openly wondering what the chain of events were. We know he was hurt. The question is....did the team want to IR him and he refused the designation or did they waive him and needed to make sure other teams knew he was injured. Not sure why/if that is required? If unclaimed, the Pats can claim him but he must accept the IR designation unless he refuses to report....?

I guess it doesn't matter. Just trying to understand the dynamics better.

IIRC, it's basically the same thing we did to the Panthers with Gaffney. He was out for the year, but they had two choices: either keep him through the final cutdowns and then IR him, or waive him with the injured designation then IR him if/when he cleared waivers. The Panthers chose the latter outcome, gambled that he'd make it through waivers, and we claimed him. Same thing happened to us here with Roberts- I don't think he refused the designation or anything, since it never came to that.

I assume the Pats wanted to keep Roberts by stashing him on IR, but weren't willing to give him a spot on the final 53, even for a day or so, in order to guarantee that outcome. This rule is in place to keep teams from stashing young talent on IR when other teams would be willing to sign them to the 53.

I believe the Bears claimed Leblanc off waivers. They would have to waive him again to get him on the practice squad

I'm not sure about that. Once he is on a PS, the other 31 teams can sign him at any time.

@manxman2601 might have become the pats GM. This offseason the roster has really started to look like what the draft board has been preaching for years.

Thanks. I can claim Foster, Mason and Cooper but as much as I'd like too, can't claim Eric Rowe. He was Mayoclinic's guy (and there were a couple of others too who I can't remember right now). I was all over Byron Jones in that draft rather than Rowe and thought Rowe was a better safety than CB. Nice trade though - I certainly didn't dislike Rowe. I just preferred Jones.

So, with the savings on the cap, who gets paid.

Some comments on the comments:

1. I've never been more happy to to slog through a 13 page thread before.

2. I am an unabashed charter member of those "height whores" JMCO so colorfully labeled. So this trade was most welcomed by me....and my ilk.

3. Curran says, 6'2, the NFL site says 6'1, so the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. At any rate, it will be nice to have a CB who when he sits down at the team's group meeting will have his feet touching the floor.

4. Interesting to watch tape on him in this thread vs Calvin Johnson. I was actually impressed with his coverage. On 2 of the catches he was right there, but didn't make the play; partly because the pass was perfect, partly because CJ is a HOF WR and physical mismatch for everyone, and partly because as we've see so often with Butler and Ryan, inexperienced CB's don't make plays on balls that more experienced CB's do.

5. The only question in my mind on this deal is to wonder why Rowe has reportedly performed so badly so far this season. Badly enough that rumors of him being cut were out there. Clearly the Pats had that question answered to THEIR satisfaction, though I wish someone will explain to me how this kid took a step back this pre season.

6. Interesting to note that Gilmore, the tall Cleveland CB who I desired, went for a 6th round pick in the 2017 draft, while Rowe took a 4th round pick in 2018. I wonder if Cleveland would have taken a 4th round for Gilbert, or were they simply afraid to look like the Pats farm club....or was Gilbert just that bad.

7. Yes Andy, there IS time-value in draft picks. Now whether every year you delay equates to a full round, is just an opinion, but whether you think it's a full round, or something less, there IS value in delaying a season. For example by waiting until 2018 the Pats will more than likely get that 4th back in comp picks from the 2017 FA class.

8. Reading Rowe's projections from his draft year, press man is a strength, while zone coverage reaction time was a weakness. I'm OK with that because as a situational guy you can put him in situations that will accentuate his strengths. Plus we play a lot more man that we used to.

9. I don't see Rowe starting or moving Colman/Jones out of the slot corner position to start. I DO see him as being a guy who takes on specific jobs MattyP gives him. In other words he give us more "positional flexibility"

1o. Kline was better than most people give him credit for. His admittedly poor performances at the end of last season were a direct result of him trying to play injured because of the beat up situation the entire OL was in. As others have said, he is a great back up guy for any of the interior OL positions and OT in a pinch, and a more than adequate spot starter. But it seems he had more value to the Pats as trade capital given the logjam the Pats have at OG.

11. BTW- since we are speaking about OG's, Greg Bedard made Chris Barker one of his 3 ups when grading the Pats preseason. He thought Barker played very well.

BOTTOM LINE- this kid has a skill set that this team sorely lacked. And as many have said, gives us some added protection from any FA defections at S or CB next season. I join the vast majority here in giving this trade a BIG thumbs up.

The Bears signed Leblanc to their practice squad cant we get him back?

I'm not sure about that. Once he is on a PS, the other 31 teams can sign him at any time.

No, when the Bears claimed LeBlanc off waivers from the Patriots, he went to their 53-man squad. If the Bears want him on their practice squad, they need to release him, see if he can clear waivers again (which he didn't the first time), and then sign him to the practice squad (while possibly bidding against other teams' practice squad offers).

Basically, the player needs to be given a chance to make someone else's 53 man roster before he can go to the developmental team.

I just hope that we can get through the first part of the season into our BYE without any disasters because the team we will have post BYE will be a monster.

Yeh, you forced us all to drink the jones koolaid, and rightfully so.

I remember Rowe being someone many of us were hoping would be there for our second rounder, so this is a very welcome addition.

I just love the possibilities this move allows. If butler becomes too expensive, we have some extra roster protection. If Chung or mccourty get hurt, we have some support on the back end. We now have more flexibility when it comes to tight ends and oversized receivers.

There are no downsides, and there is the chance he is everything we hoped browner to be, but younger and locked in for at least three years.

I really love how BB has gone in for this season. I thought we would be trading off guys due to high depth, but we have actually been upping the talent level. With the way injuries ruined our season last year, I feel like we have more options and better guys at every depth position.

You are 100% correct. A player can be signed off the PS only if they are destined for the 53. I didn't communicate my understanding of the process well in earlier posts.

Come on Cap'n, you're better than that. Reality check: last year you were ready to spend a first-round pick on Eric Rowe. Now you're clinging to some speculative tweet to "prove" that Belichick is an idiot chump for gambling a late 4th on him?

It's fine to be a principled contrarian, but this just amounts to "If Bill's for it, I'm against it!"

It's shameful the way you young people show off with your ability to remember things.

Even the pick compensation isn't really a downside because we'll have comp picks that year which are, as we now, now tradeable. My only concern about this pick is suggestions I've seen on twitter saying that Rowe struggled to learn the Eagles' defense. But, in terms of upside, the additions of Rowe and Mingo are really exciting additions to this defense.

The other thing I like about this trade is that it means Mason and Cooper are probably good to go.

Yep- Swartz is running a zone D and Rowe was having issues with it. That and being a Chip guy sealed his fate.

I think the 3rd DB job will be up for grabs all year and will depend on the offense they are facing. For example, if the 3rd WR is a tall guy that typically takes his routes to the outside, it would be unwise to have Coleman on him. If they run their routes underneath then Cyrus or Coleman are ok. Same goes for the 4th WR.

Poor JJ just got pushed down the trough. I don't think they are done. More moves after AZ

I was wondering about him as a future Harmon replacement. Either that or play him as McCourty plays now and move McCourty back to centerfielder.

Usually the taller you are the rarer the skill set of a CB is. 5''9-5'10 is the height of most CBs for a reason. To find the same skills in a guy that is 6'0 is not common and why those guys go in round 1. 6'2 or higher is near unheard of. Usually if you are that height you lack some skill but can use your height and the skill you do have to over come it (Ala Brandon Browner who while not skills used his size to bully CBs and knock them off the line).

Rowe at 6'1 is pretty tall for a CB and it is unlikely he has that natural quick twitch to quickly change direction at that size but I do think if he works on his game he can be a player like Talib who has the size to push a WR around to gain an edge at the line and the skill to hold on to it after he gains the advantage for 4-5 seconds while being very hard to throw over.

He had a 6.7 3-cone and a 3.97 20-yard shuttle.

I don't see him as a Chung-type player?

Rowe is a cover guy

Well, actually Butler WAS a world beater, see the last Patriot's defensive play of the 2014 NFL season. Also was stellar in the 2nd half of that Super Bowl, despite a fluke play against him.
Well, you've got me there - technically in his final play as a rookie, Butler was the definition of a "World Beater", and yeah he did have a great game overall, but his season in general wasn't filled with highlights or anything.
