Sally Jenkins Eviscerates Goodell in Washington Post

Different browser worked but I don't really relish the idea of having to dust off internet explorer every time I want to read a washington post article ugh. The vertical scroll bar will literally appear upon the initial load of the page and then disappear for me on chrome, so weird.

I had no problem with it on chrome.

While I love Sally Jenkins and wanna marry her, I actually disagree with this tiny excerpt from her:



IMO Brady lost in the court of public opinion. Pretty much 99% of non-pats fans think he's a cheater.

I think because Brady faught this as long as he did we now have court records, Amicus briefs and appeal transcripts that all indicate this was a witch hunt. Anyone educated enough to want to look will see just that.

So imagine Roger is gone after 2020 and ESPN decides to do a 30/30 about deflategate. He won't be around any longer and they may expose how dumb this whole thing was.

I think you'd be surprised.

When I look at social media nowadays, the opinion appears to be much more divided. I think people are just tired of hearing about the whole thing.

And also, don't just use Jets as an example to this. Of course they'll all say Brady's a cheater.

I must agree. What was once a fun game, Goodell has made into an insufferable loop of power grabs, deception and the talking heads discussing long term NFL business strategy. All of it, more apt for legal journals and the WSJ than the once enjoyable sports pages. Oh yeah, with dumbass Goodell always in the forefront, kinda like a real life Vince McMahon, but without the fun.

At least for me it came with a silver lining. It forced me to step back and re-evaluate the focus of my passion. And, my new take on all things NFL off-field, and anti-Patriot, is "Hey it's just a game. You're really taking things too seriously bro." Has worked wonders for my state of mind. This last SB win also helped in that regard Pressure off, if you know what I mean. So I've just decided to roll with it, ignore the noise, enjoy the game, and hopefully see the best HC+QB tandem ever seen or will be seen, close out masterful careers with a few more trophies.

Whilst I agree with Sally Jenkins and have done so all along (outside of the court of public opinion comment), what's the point? The owners, being money grubbing bastards, haven't fired his candy ass yet. Goodell is a ****ty commissioner? Yeah, we know that.

The guy is being paid an exorbitant amount to be an incompetent fool sucking the life out of NFL enjoyment. Who suffers? Not Goodell, not the owners, but the Patriots, the Saints, the Dolphins and their fans (not so much Miami). What's done? Nothing.

If Smith and the NFLPA have any ****ing balls, demanding Goodell's resignation will be the first tabled item in CBA negotiations.

Perhaps saddest of all, I've been actively recruiting new Patsfans down under for the best part of 20+ years. Recent converts are experiencing the joy I once had where now it just feels like meh, watch the Pats obliterate teams, go on a Super Bowl run = whatever. As a fan, that sucks before Goodell has sucked the life out of me enjoying something the NFL is never likely to see again.

I appreciate Sally Jenkins writing ability even more than her stance here. In less than 1,000 words she's nailed this issue, without having to go into the science or legal issues at all.

Even though I fondly remember the glory days of Boston sports writing, when the Sunday Globe Sports section was something to truly look forward to, I have to admit that she writes better than anyone in Boston sports media history. Yes, the old boys (Ryan, Gammons, et al) had great connections and provided timely info, but they didn't write this well. Bravo Sally. Raising a glass to your excellence.

What she's doing there is similar to what ESPN is doing with publishing a timeline of deflategate using Mort's incorrect initial report as if it were true. She's trying to set the conventional wisdom for this going forward.

She's got a credible forum in the Washington Post, so if she writes that people think Brady did nothing wrong, even if it's not true right now, it helps to make that the story in the future.
