As sick as I am at reading about Johnny Manziel, who isn't even on an NFL roster right now mind you, I really do feel for the family.

I see people call him stupid, etc, but to me it looks like he suffers from some form of mental illness and addiction. He needs professional help and until he gets it, will most likely continue on this path until it destroys him

I don't take any pleasure in watching this unfold, people with mental health issues need to be treated just like someone with high cholesterol, diabetes, etc... he has a medical problem and if it's not fixed, it will ultimately destroy him

It has to just crush you as a parent to see your son/daughter continually make destructive choices and refuse to get help or take anyone's advice.. its just too bad that it seems their relationship isn't in a place where they could have some sort of intervention as a family, he comes off as a black sheep and Id bet all kinds of money that there is a mental disorder that is the conductor on that train to darkness


The media doesn't help matters by following him around constantly and making a headline out of him either...

It's just really, really sad and I hope that he gets the help he needs before it's too late

I agree. He's been like this since I've heard of him. He's selfish and has no respect for authority. It's his way or the highway. When he got caught selling his autograph on merch when he was in college, he denied and had no accountability. He's a spoiled brat and I could care less what becomes of him. We all get up every morning and bust our asses and follow the rules. Screw him and his blown, massive opportunities

Affluenza doesn't affect kids that have "every advantage". Family connection and support are something they lack. It affects kids who were raised far more by hired help than by the parents themselves. The vast majority of people they're exposed to are either on the payroll, or other rich kids in elite, exclusive schools. They form few, if any meaningful relationships, have little or no empathy and find only find pleasure and satisfaction in pleasing themselves.

Affluenza is a very real thing. It affects almost only the "elite", and only in cases where there is not a strong family environment like the Krafts.

I'm not familiar with Manziel's family situation so have no idea if that is his issue.

Isn't what you're describing a syndrome of emotional neglect, not of wealth? Is there any reason to believe that rich people are particularly prone to not caring about their own children?

It's certainly a type of emotional neglect. What sets it apart is the treatment the kids receive by those they encounter most. Those not elite aren't always surrounded by hired help, and face real consequences for their actions. I think you're being overly simplistic, and perhaps projecting your own imaginary reality. I don't know of any sound studies in this area so if you do please post pointers to the info. I will say the one childhood friend that I had that suffered from a mild case of affluenza certainly did not fit your description. Yes the hired help fixed the meals but the family dined together, and there was about the same amount parental interaction as in my solidly middle class family (my parents spent huge amounts of time working outside the home). He was given everything, never had to work hard, retired the day he graduated from college and lived a life of hedonism and drugs until his premature death, attributed to a heart attack and in my opinion probably caused by heart damage resulting from years of cocaine and other drugs. Sad, but not for lack of parental interaction as much as the wrong kind of parenting. He was spoiled and enabled by parents who loved him but did not give him tough love.

My understanding is that Manziel's family gave him the smoothest free ride possible as he was growing up and developing, every advantage possible. I don't know that it was a lack of contact and support as much as a lack of adversity (it's a cliche that adversity builds character) and challenge. Don't know enough to have a full picture but what I've seen says his family enabled him, at least until the trainwreck was too obvious to overlook.

Also should note that the case originating the term "affluenza" definitely involved a supportive family, the kid's mother took him on the run and fled to Mexico trying to avoid the consequences of his parole violation. That's sick, but it's not an absent parent not supporting the kid.

I suspect the whole thing is too complicated for simple models. Why did Jonathan Kraft turn out okay while my friend had a very similar situation but did not? Why did Manziel get QB hero status handed to him on a silver platter and blow it when Peyton Manning took the same thing and did not screw it up (apart from maybe dodging a teabag once)? I'm sure there's a lot more to it than just having a nanny or housekeeper.
