Very interesting. I do somewhat like Harbor. Curious what he can do here. It's definitely an uphill battle to make the team.

I like him. He is a good 3rd TE. Is an all rounder too. I think he sticks on roster.

This is a very week TE draft and the pats want to get the positioned sorted out through FA and they certainly have done that i think.

Here's what I think.

The Pats have 2 unique talents in Bennett and Gronk. Guys who can play all over the field at a high level. Both as in line blockers, or wide as receivers who demand first rate defenders. I think they are going to build an offense around those players. One that will be unique.

So if they are going to build that offense they will need to be deep enough at the position that they won't be held hostage to any injuries that might occur to Gronk and Bennett. Naturally when you have 2 of the top 6 TE's in the league, there is going to be a drop off when they are injured. BB's goal is to be prepared so the drop off isn't gigantic. Harbor looks like he's a solid pro who can be a good special teamer and fill in situationally. The numbers that Toys posted are pretty impressive as far as Harbour's speed and quickness go. Looks to me to be a nice depth and competition signing for the Pats.

Looks to me that it is getting harder and harder for good football players to make this roster. There will be very few locks and the men who make this team will have EARNED it.

From Rotoworld:

Free agent TE Jeff Cumberland visited the Patriots.

It's his first known visit since getting released from the Jets. He left without a deal, leading to the Patriots signing Clay Harbor. Cumberland should eventually resurface as a veteran flyer.

So you guys think he takes Michael Williams' spot? Williams got killed by the Broncos, but everyone did.
With 11 draft picks, have to imagine a TE or two is drafted as well.

Belichick fills all holes in FA .... trades all tradeable draft picks to 2017 ... hands the keys to Caserio ... goes fishing on VI rings draft weekend.

Feel free to list all the 29+ year old TEs that the Patriots have brought in and developed.

It doesnt refute the "not brought in to be a development player" point you want to make.. but for me two things about Harbor stuck out: special teams and plays fullback -which along with his several other noted skillsets makes what Belichick likes most in a player, versatility

Good point. If the team is going to focus on using two tight ends then it needs to be able to function if one of them is injured for some length of time. It may make sense for the team to be relatively "loaded" at that position for that reason. Perhaps Gronkowski-Bennett-Harbor-Derby will all make the team.

I'm really rooting for Derby. Watching his film he reminds me of a bigger Dallas Clark. Definitely jumps better and is better in the red/end zone. Perhaps he takes the redshirt route that Vereen and others have taken and then go on to bigger and better things.

We all know Belichick has an awning for the non-traditional guy. Hopefully Derby can find a niche or a strong point that seperates him enough to be kept around.

Yikes. Didn't bother to read any other posts first. Freaking alarming how many bad punsters on this board
We need a two bad puns in one week automatic two week ban rule. 2nd time you get suspended and you're done son. Learn from Goodell, Ian.

I am just saying that he's not going to be a top contributor that would make a difference on a one year deal like, say, Chris Long could. I think he has the athleticism and attitude to help across the board in small ways, some of which may need to be developed. Maybe like a Brandon Bolden but at a different position. And I know Bolden was younger, but I think Harbor could be that type of versatile player. Or a more athletic HooMan, if you prefer. In fact that's a solid comp for me. Nice signing over 3 years, probably not a difference maker for 1.
