people are talking about his possibility of coming to the Pats

first, I think he's still a top player and got hosed by the Rex Ryan scheme

if he stands to be a decent discount versus Jones, get him

I'm waiting on this personally unless or until we would trade Chandler Jones.

Trade Jones for some much needed draft capital and sign Mario. The money situation will remain similar and you probably have a better player as well.

Although he is a great player, i think what makes the patriots really work financially is not over-spending in Defensive Ends, which demand a great amount of money.

We can get players that fit our scheme perfectly and produce a lot of results without throwing too much money for said players (Sheard, Ayers, Ninko, just to say a few), plus we got 3 second year players (Grisson, Flowers, Rufus Johnson) who should be ready to contribute. I am actually hopeful that they can replace Jones once his rookie contract is up.

Conclusion, I doubt BB would sign Mario Williams. I'd love to see him here, but realistically, won't lose sleep on it.

I'm opposed to anything that weakens this team going into next season and for that reason I have been opposed to the idea of trading Jones for a pick. That said the idea of signing Williams for the money They may be considering using on Jones and then trading Jones for a good pick makes a ton of sense to me. They would get a better player for essentially the same money and upgrade with the pick. I have serious doubts that the Patriots would be the high bidder for Williams and see a team like the Raiders as a much more likely outcome but the idea is really appealing. They are going to have to move fast to make the numbers work so they can address the offense early in free agency and makes a move like this but hopefully the pundits are right for once.

eh, I'm not a fan of signing Williams. By all accounts he quit on the Bills last year, and while he may be one of those guys that's motivated by being in a winning situation (Corey Dillon), I wouldn't feel comfortable betting on it for even the low end of what he'll command.

Jones keeps getting hurt and fades away in the 2nd half of the season. I'm tired of it. Part of me suspects that he is juicing during the offseason and then stops when the season starts and so he's worn out by midseason.

OK but why doesn't the team trading for Jones sign Mario instead w/o losing draft picks?

Williams can't be any worse then jones was vs denver in the AFCCG this year.

he's played plenty well in non-winning situations......playing for Rex turned everyone off

He really doesn't do much for me anymore..maybe it was due to his down year and i was just ehh now or what but if cost is reasonable then sure

I'm sure they would be making a run at him but trading Jones presupposes the Patriots signed Williams. As I said before I'm not high on trading Jones because it weakens the team, the upside of signing Williams would be the opportunity to continue improving for next season by replacing Jones with a really good player and adding a high draft pick. Overall I just want them to be aggressive this free agency to create as good a team for the next couple of seasons as possible, and absent the 1st round pick this was as good an option as I have heard. I doubt it happens but I'm still intrigued by it.

I think Mario still has a couple of good years left. It's true that a team can sign him instead of trading for Jones but Williams could have a short list of where he would sign, so he wouldn't necessarily be up for grabs to best offer, especially if he does so at less than market value to play for a contender that won't/can't/doesn't pay top dollar.

Edit: double post. blaming server

At this point I would rather have Williams over Jones. Jones is a probowl player during the season and becomes a jag/scrub during the playoffs. 2015-2016 wasn't the firs time he has disappeared when its one and done.

The same can be said of Ninko. If we were to do something drastic like let them both go like we did our starting safeties in 2011, I think we would actually make out the same or better by the end of the year with big savings.
