keep him. he will be the next aaron rodgers/joe flacco ;)

This is the old Tom Moore in Indy theory on why they didn't bother to have Mannings backups so much as take snaps in practice. If he's hurt, "we're ****ed." Q: Exactly so why not have the backup get some reps just in case? "Why would we want to practice being ****ed?"

Beyond being a humorous quote it's not the most ridiculous theory I've ever heard - the difference being that the circumstances change as the starter ages...I don't know nor do any of us at what point TB will truly be done, but surely we can agree it's closer now than it was 4 years ago. As it stands JG is a better (going into 3rd year here, not your standard offense) AND cheaper (rookie deal) alternative to any other backup. If there was truly someone with a hard-on for JG that would offer significant value I think BB would do it in a heartbeat, could sign Cassel instead, and I certainly wouldn't be mad at him for doing so. But the whole trade scenario is a false situation set up only in this forum. Nobody's doing that. And if anyone was even thinking of it, there's no better argument against acquiring a Brady backup than, well, Cassel, Hoyer, and Mallett. I hope JG is different, seems like a good dude and maybe when he's 30 he can start in NE and I hope he gets his shot somewhere, but this whole thing is kinda ludicrous.
Well the question is what did we come away from 2008 with that was so much better than Indy did when Manning went down? We both missed the playoffs!

For better or for worse, not tanking the season is consistent with the Patriots' mission statement (yes, they have one) which says they consistently compete for championships.

And it's worth noting that since 2001, no AFC East team has ever finished with a better record; the two times the Pats missed the playoffs, it was on tiebreakers.

If I am Belichick and there is a reasonable offer for Grop I make a play for Osweiler ... so we would still have a competent backup QB .... Additional draft picks by trading Grop ... and totally screwing the Broncos who would have to bring in or draft another QB who needs to learn their system - no easy task.

If we could get a high 2nd and say high 4th round pick for Grop would you do it? Not throwing this out there totally serious ... but it sure would screw the Broncos leaving only the Chiefs and Steelers as legit opposition to block our path to Super Bowl LI appearance. doubt Brock would want to come here ... stuck behind another legend ... but it's a definite no if you don't at least try.

How much does it cost to sign Brock Lobster though?

I think we should trade him for any tall WR who looks anything remotely like Randy Moss. Does he have a current doppleganger in the league?

We won the Division in 2008 ~ same as in 2002, in fact ~ but in both cases got screwed out'f it by the NFL's inexplicably asinine TieBreakers, which put all sorts of stupid **** ahead of Strength of Schedule.

The Patriots were the hottest Team in FootBall by the end of 2008.

We slaughtered the NFC Champion Cardinals.

How soon we forget.

OTOH I also remember that team suffering a 2015-like string of injuries, too, as the year ended.

It's not a question of forgetting, it's that tiebreakers for better or for worse do exist and we did not make the playoffs just as the Colts did not make them when they lost Manning for the year. Call it a moral victory if you want but our outcome still led to the same outcome as the Colts only win a lesser draft pick.

Yeah, they were dropping like Flies. But that hardly changes the fact that we outscored our last 3 Opponents ~ including the eventual NFC Champion Cardinals ~ 109-33.

You miss the point:

Despite a litany of Injuries beyond Brady's, we were the most dangerous Team in the League at the end of the Season, during a Year where the PlayOffs consisted of 12 extremely beatable Teams.

In other words: We were PlayOff Contenders and genuine SuperBowl Contenders, even after Brady was lost for the Year in Week 1, and it's beyond ludicrously stupid to suggest that we could've known that we'd end up getting screwed out'f a Division Title that by all rights we actually won, even without Brady.

Hence the Idea that we would've been better off tanking a Season where we were legitimate Super Bowl Contenders ~ yes, even without Brady ~ is one of the most foolish I've ever read'f.

Head-to-head record, division record, record in common games, and conference record are "asinine" and "stupid ****"? So exactly what tiebreakers would you use?

Not to mention the fact that he has no experience in our offensive system, which generally takes an important position like QB (WR to a lesser extent) at least a full solid year to get down.

With JG, we already have 2 full seasons invested in our offense. That's basically the main reason why I'd keep him.

Ummm...Strength of Schedule...as explicitly stated in the post that you responded to.

Head to head and division record make more sense as tie breakers before strength of schedule

I disagree about Divisional Record but I understand that my opinion is not a popular one.

And I don't really feel like debating it.

If we can just Agree to Disagree...I'd call that a Win/Win.

* Head to Head is an important TieBreaker??

Golly.

You don't say.

JG will fetch nothing right now. There continues to be a narrative of "if we can get ____". Our back ups have done nothing to merit consideration. Cassel played on the remnants of the 07 team and while he got the job done to an extent, greatly benefitted from a ridiculous amount of talent around him on O.

NE did well to get Chung for Cassel and Chung has been great the last two years. I have nothing against JG. He should remain in NE for the length of his rookie deal and be the insurance if things go poorly in terms of Brady's health or the NFL's appeal. Either way, no decent GM would offer top 40 picks for him.

It was such a stupid statement I couldn't believe you were being serious.

Let me get this straight.

If NE and NYJ tie, and NE swept NYJ in the two games they played, but NYJ had the better strength of schedule (and remember that teams in the same division have 14 of their 16 games the same -- so SoS will only be different because of two games), NYJ should win the division.

Riiiiiiiiiiight.
