I hope you're not saying Dion Lewis was a great player.

He was a great player for the Patriots.. outstanding in fact. He was on pace for some eye popping stats, and he made getting a 1st down on 3rd and 17 look easy

A couple weeks ago I posted... the 2nd coming of Dion will not be walking through that door any time soon. Trey + Learns to Block = Dion

EDIT:

COMBINE / PRO DAY STATS:

Dion Lewis - 3 Cone Drill 6.9 secs
Trey Williams - 3 Cone Drill 6.84 secs

Dion Lewis - 40 Yard Dash 4.57 Sec
Trey Williams - 40 Yard Dash 4.45 Sec

Dion Lewis - 20 Yard Shuttle 4.18 Sec
Trey Williams - 20 Yard Shuttle 4.12 Sec
I'm sure you were kidding with the above and that few here believe we can judge a football player with a few clicks of a stop watch. For some additional perspective consider:
  • In 3 years at Texas A&M, Williams rushed for 1342 yards and 18 TDs.
  • In 2 years at Pitt, Lewis rushed for 2860 yards and 30 TDs.
We all hope to see Williams suceed, but expecting him to be Dion minus the blocking is neither realistic nor fair to Williams.

Keep in mind Johnny Football led the team in rushing attempts and yardage in Williams' Fr and So seasons at A&M. Sumlin was not taking the ball out of his hands and isn't a bellcow back lover anyway.

FWIW Williams led the Aggies in ypc his Jr year.

IMO hes not Lewis but Williams is elusive and has speed to burn.

I don't judge. I leave that to the coaches. I'm an amateur

Good. IDK how good he will be here but these are the kind of players that can make a difference. 3rd down RB is the most underrated position in the NFL. They move chains and occasionally if good enough make big runs. after catch. Bolden has filled in well but getting the real thing (if he is it) be nice.

Also since all he will be used for is 10 plays a game (unless you are truly exceptional like Lewis is) he should be able to do that this week.

This guy may be short in stature, but he's certainly not short on confidence.

“I’m a versatile kind of back,” Williams said. “I do kick returns, a little bit of slot, scat back. That’s just my style. I feel like I bring a lot to the team, and I can help fill in for the guys that — they pretty much need.”

“As far as slot goes, it’s a different position from running back, but I’m learning the routes, I’m learning how to run those routes and the routes they call,” Williams said. “They call them different, everything. I’m learning that, I’m learning the routes out of the backfield. I’m just learning everything right now, getting accustomed to everything. It’s my second day, so I’m pretty excited. I’m excited to get on that field and show them what I can do. …

“I’m slowly getting there, but I’ll be there for sure. I know for a fact I’ll stick. I’m just slowly adjusting to it.”

“Honestly, I wasn’t able to help with the Cowboys, so it’s — it’s really, this is kind of the same feeling,” Williams said. “For the most part, I’m on a winning team now. The Patriots have been doing their thing, so I can help contribute and help this team win a Super Bowl.”

...and in Vereen a slightly above-average change of pace/passing back in Vereen saved the team in the SB.

Praying for the kid. He cried when he got the call that the Cowboys had claimed him off the practice squad of the Redskins. Then he gets cut by them without even being given the chance to show what he can do.
So he was so up, then his spirit got crushed only to land in Heaven and get to blame with football jesus.
He is hungry and has a huge chip on his shoulder.

His comments in that interview published by nesn sounded ****y, so I got curious and decided to look him up to get a feel for his personality. From this old interview, seems like a cheerful, light hearted kid.

Without having seen his recent interview (can't find it anywhere), I'm guessing when he made those comments about the Super Bowl, he did it in a playful, good-natured tone, not in a pounding-his-chest, bold proclamation type of tone.

He'll have to learn the way to talk around here...help the team beat the Eagles, not win the Super Bowl.

Can we stop this ******** and proper definition of "great"?

Lewis was a GREAT PLAYER. He was the BEST satellite back in the entire NFL this year. That makes him GREAT. An injury does not take that way. When he has been healthy to play, he has proven his value. Injuries do not take away greatness.
If Gronk went down his rookie year with a career ending injury, it would not change the fact that he was a great football player. It does not matter how little he would have benefited his team, this is about him as an individual and his abilities.

If your abilities are great, you are great. Sometimes it doesn't work how we want, but it does not change the skill that is there.

Not every great player is a HOF player -- that's what takes consistency.

We should all have something better to do than argue about what the definition of "great" is. Watch him play, if he looks great, he's ****ing great.

Nice post!

Difference, He was a split back and Dion was a full time back.

There's some old goat on the Patriots who was picked in the 6th round of the 2000 draft. That old goat showed people a thing or two. Maybe he can show him the road to Damascus.

Agreed but . . . FWIW, Williams had better YPC and YPR for his college career.

If he can be at least what vereen was and half of what Dion is, than we are gonna be ok.

To acquire that kind of quality and production this late in the season would be a monumental coup.
I just like that we have some hope for the third down back--maybe White will surprise, but thinking about his production just sort of depresses me.

With everyone back at practice today, and with a reasonable hope that the team's two best skill players will be back come playoff time, there's a potential scenario of a damn healthy team come then. The only exceptions being Solder and Lewis. Solder we can definitely have a degree of comfort that the line will hold up fine. So Lewis not being there was the thing that was hard to get around...so just having the possibility of a spark back there is enough to lift the spirits.
