Obviously, we needed another safety, special teams player on the roster. He was waived, so we could have just put him on the PS for a look, right?

With the trading deadline coming and Stork and others eligible to come back [?] what's the situation?

Just a look before PS? He's 220 pounds, so he ain't no CB.

Thoughts?

My guess - placed waiver claim for purpose of enticing him to sign to practice squad once the Pats cut him this week. His spot on roster will be taken by the activation of Stork.

They couldn't claim him and send him right to the PS? It's not like every other team didn't have a shot before us, or do I misunderstand?

No, when you claim a player he goes straight to the active roster. To your point - if they're picking last and want him on the PS, why claim him at all? I'd guess that they were afraid he already had an agreement with the Colts to sign to their PS, and wanted to use this opportunity to make their case.

My misunderstanding? I though it was only when we poached from another teams PS that we were required to keep the player on the active roster for a while.

OK, so I read a player has to clear waivers to be put on the practice squad. He obviously didn't clear waivers. Do we have to keep him on the roster for a time period before offering him a PS spot?

Serious question.

No, with Coleman, we claimed him and released him the next day, then tried to sign him to the ps, but he chose to go to Seattle.

Sorry - my misunderstanding as I didn't realize that was your question. I believe jboston19 is correct; you can immediately release a player who you claimed on waivers. Whereas guys signed off the practice squad need to stay on the roster for a few weeks.
