ESPN Terminates Grantland

Nothing to see here, folks. Move along, move along...

"We're ending Grantland and rolling pieces into other parts of the organization" would have been one thing. This is something else. Wow.

ESPN is rapidly atrophying. There's two ways to compete in the digital media space: 1) Buzzfeed style spamming of four sentence clickbait with the links below the fold, listicles, and CPM stuff augmented with branded content or 2) Premium branded content that commands a much higher premium and works for both parties. They just killed off their version of the latter so look for an increase in the former. ESPN used to have incredible brand equity too. Amazing how quickly they have eaten themselves.

Nice, Grantland was the last reason to go to any of the ESPN family of websites. Hopefully Barnwell, Mays, Lowe, etc. will jump **** and catch on with Simmons' TBA HBO site.

None of this was surprising really, rather it was pretty much to be expected. ESPN's racing to the bottom on content quality. If that wasn't apparent before, it became apparent in how they covered Deflategate and Lamar Odom's coma. It's all low-effort ****posting of lists and gifs from here on out.

I guess is what we get when we're not willing to pay for content.

538 is still alive, but that site seem to hide any relationship to ESPN.

Grantland without Simmons was, for the most part, poo.

It certainly wasn't as good, and I was intensely skeptical that it could be sustained over the long term without Simmons, but it still had some bright spots. Most notably the NBA coverage with Zach Lowe and the NFL coverage with Barnwell and Mays.

I doubt it will be for long, and more importantly it's not very good IMO. They just can't produce enough quality content to sustain a semi-standalone site. And I say that as someone who loves pretty much everything Nate Silver writes.
