Skins Portis, Samuels ridicule dog fighting as crime (merged)

I've seen dog fights, and yes they are all that bad. Both pitbulls go for eachother's throats, and they bite the sh*t out of eachother. if one dog gets a good bite in on the others throat he will kill him, and sometimes these fights end with one of the dogs dead and the other severily wounded. The owners will then either shoot him or just let him try and heal from his wounds/die. They don't usually take the dogs to a vet because they are afraid of getting busted. It's disgusting.

Thank you for the info, I am going to back out of this thread before my fellow posters lynch me.

If Vick is guilty I would hope he receives the maximum penalty and is made an example.

Where did that come from? I thought I had joined a discussion board.

Then let's discuss. Which topic should we discuss?

Oh, I know!

What kind of degenerate f****** ****** makes this statement regarding the organized fighting, maiming, and killing of dogs: "Anyone ever been to a dog fight, they cant be all that bad if they are so popular"?

I'm pretty sure I can list a lot of things that are both popular and all that bad. You don't deserve your dogs.

F*** off.

Dog fights are wrong and the authorities should look into it. I don't think any action should be taken by the NFL if vick is not found guilty.

Dogfighting is bad, but it's no where near as bad as drugs and that sort of thing (IMO).

I am sorry if I offended you are any one else, no offense was intended.
Mixed martial arts fighting is considered fairly violent, the object is knock your opponet senseless or choke them into unconciusness, yet these men do it willingly.

It is possible that dog fighting could be similar, evidently not, but how would I know, I have been to a pride fight never a dog fight.

Here in OR they use dogs to hunt bear and cougar, lots of people on both sides of the fence on that issue, Good people on both sides. Discuss.

I just want to reiterate that there is nothing natural to dog fighting. dogs are pack animals.

In fact their pack instincts are bred out of them.
Example, when a dog puts its tails between its legs or urinates this is a sign of submission.

These dogs are bred selectively to IGNORE these signs of submission and fight.
In fact males even fight female dogs which another pack no-no.

.....and then there's veal.
Which I choose not to eat, nor have I ever eaten, after reading about what the poor baby calves go through. And please don't preach to me about chickens, cows, etc... as I would probably never eat meat again if I truly knew what kinds of lives they led. I prefer to think they live happy lives grazing in the meadow until it is their time. Fighting dogs, unfortunately I have read too much to know that these dogs have any semblance of a good life.

The fact that you fail to see the difference between grown men choosing to engage in "fairly violent" rules-based combat and dogs being trained, bred, and forced to fight to the death...FOR HUMAN ENTERTAINMENT...tells me how silly it would be for me to even attempt to explain it to you.

I do apologize for calling you a degenerate f****** ******, however. That was uncalled for.

Than you, peace.

Than you, peace.

My previous apology was inadequate. I apologize for the entire personal attack.

Few things piss me off faster than animal abuse, but that's no excuse.

And now, campfire songs!

If I had a 100 million dollar contract I would help out family, maybe set them up in a home. Where there is smoke there is fire, still I see no proof to link Vick to dogfighting. I will wait and see on this one. Anyone ever been to a dog fight, they cant be all that bad if they are so popular.

LOL, yeah, it's America's national pasttime. So much so that NASCAR is now putting two dogs in the back seats of cars. I hear Mangini sleeps with two dogs.

Lets be real about the Portis bashing...Samuels was laughing his azz off as Portis was speaking...Also seems like a convienent editing job (Portis is cut off as he is trying to explain). Portis was bustin chops. This is a guy who makes it a hobby to mock the media. His message, albeit poorly delivered, was " media stay the hell out of our homes and lives."

Didn't sound like he knew what a true dog fight was. See his reference to dogs fighting in the streets.

I don't condone dog fighting, and if Vick is guilty, then he should be punished. But lets stop running around like an angry mob looking to pillage at the first sign of wrong doing.

Good lord, did ya read the whole quote about where he lived, you can find a dog fight anywhere? That there are probably Judges who fight dogs, cops who fight dogs, etc.? And you're going to try to say he doesn't even know what a dog fight is???? And the guy laughing looks to me to be very nervous laughter, like he knows how bad this train wreck will be but is unable to stop it.
Sorry, spoiled brat NFL players who think the rules of society and basic DECENCY don't apply to them, most average americans can spot that a mile away, and we don't feel like letting them get away with it.

I don't see anything bad coming Portis or Samuel's way. They will issue their statements, get a brief talking to from someone in the skins organization, and they will still be laughing.

To some people it's not that big a deal. I've never seen a dog fight and don't want to. It's wrong and the people who do it should be taken care of, but it doesn't rate too high on my bad boy scale. There is so much other stuff going on that is worse. The worst thing for these guys is that the season hasn't started and there isn't much else to talk about.

The NFL is a Mass Entertainment business. Mass Enternainment businesses carefully craft and then guard the public "personas" of their "stars" or "entertainers." There's a reason for this. Many of us might not like our entertainers too much if we knew their true characters or were privy to their private behavior.

In this thread, we see an example of what happens when the veneer is broken and the audience gets an insight into who the stars or entertainers "are," even if they haven't committed a crime or done anything reprehensible themselves.

In the cases of Portis and Samuels, based on their ill-informed and stunningly ignorant comments on dog fighting, we apparently have men with severely underdeveloped social consciences and senses of propriety. In other words, as much as we might be entertained by (or even enjoy) watching them perform on Sunday afternoon, as persons, they're not folks we would want to know or with whom we would choose to associate.

How much do we want or need to know about who our stars "really are?" Should each of us limit our viewing to those players whose character or world-view meets some self-generated standard of acceptance? If we did, my guess is that most of us would end up taking a lot of long walks on Sunday afternoons in the Fall and Winter.

There are, of course, many examples of players who are indeed examples of what we would like to be ourselves or, more importantly, of what we would like our kids to become. But, even here, the lines become gray quickly. I proudly hold Tom Brady up as a role model to my little boys, but I know more than one person whose personal sense of morality is upset that he has publicly fathered a child out of marriage while equally publicly "carrying on" with another woman. It doesn't bother me, but others draw different lines than I do. (Before anyone fires off a knee-jerk "How dare you compare Brady to Portis!" comment, please note that I am not doing that. But, it is a slippery slope when we start to moralize about the private lives or life-styles of our "stars," when they haven't broken any laws or directly harmed another person.)

Are Clinton Portis and his ilk people we should disdain or avoid, or are they just people we really don't want to know too much about? Our Sunday Afternoon version of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell?"

My own resolution of this dilemma is to draw the line at illegal behavior or at physical behavior that directly harms others (as an example of the latter, NFL Players who abuse their wives or smack women around outside of bars, as happened the other day in New York, don't get my support, even if they aren't "charged.") I don't want any team that earns my allegiance to be associated with people like that--as if I needed any more reasons to dislike the Jests.

Portis hasn't broken any laws, but I'd just rather that he keep to himself his opinions about those who have. I don't want to know what he thinks or who he is. Just shut up and play football! Back behind the image, Clinton!

I'll pick and choose players that I think are worthy of being models for my sons and hope that I haven't misjudged to the extent that I wake up one day to find them plastered all over the papers.

People seem to forget a lot of people involved in this stuff are often involved in other crimes.

Also, if you study murderers a lot of them start out mutilating/torturing animals, then move on to humans. I'd personally worry about any person who gets his jollies by starving, beating, and fighting dogs.

Very relevant examples, since those behaviors were not always taken seriously as crimes. Not so long ago you could have inserted wife or kid into the Portis quote:

"I don't know if he was hitting his wife or not, but it's his property, it's his wife...If that's what he wants to do, do it. I think people should mind their business."
That's where the term "rule of thumb" comes from. In Providence Plantation, it was illegal to beat your wife with a switch bigger around than your thumb. It sounds goofy, but beating your wife with a smaller stick was legal. Didn't even need cause. Disrespect on her part was enough.

At least get out until you have a clue as to what you are talking about.

When you defend dog fighting as "not too bad" you are sure to arouse the ire of every decent person on this list. Expect it.

When you further say it isn't really a fight to the death because you've seen mutilated dogs so at least one dog survives each fight is too sick to respond to.

I hope you are only ignorant, not as disgusting as your words make you sound.

What do you mean "was"?!?

This incident is the first I've ever heard of organized dog fighting but now that I've become aware of it and think about it,somehow I'm not surprised it exists in the bowels of humanity given the fact gambling has always been around, as has competition,as has some human beings' penchant for the gory. Watching animals fight for sport is as least as old as the Romans, maybe even older, but it's a cruel, bizarre choice given the fact there are 500 other sports to enjoy and bet on today. Out of all our choices, who chooses dog/animal fighting/cruelty to watch? Unnerving thought,to say the least.
Too much money to put in a thug's hands-nothing good can possibly come of that.

Exactly my thoughts. There's a mentality behind this whole form of entertainment/money that doesn't bode well :bricks:
