Training Camp 8/11

Very nervous about Garoppolo. I was never overly impressed to begin with. He had a good string of preseason games last year but he was bad in TC, had a good drive in garbage time of the Chiefs game, played poorly against the Bills and has received bad reviews in this TC. Hoping he has some good preseason games to instill a little confidence....
I think you are being a little hard on JG. I don't think he "played poorly" vs the Bills, he was playing with 2nd and 3rd stringers vs the Bills 1st stringers. This was a rookie coming out of pretty much division II football, going straight into the NFL. I thought he did an excellent job in the exhibition games as well as the snaps he had in the regular season games.

I was very impressed with his play, best rookie QB showing in many years. Would not be shocked if we went 3-1 or 4-0 if God forbid Brady is suspended the first 4 games. I'm really not worried about training camp, JG seems to elevate his game when he is playing against the opponent in NFL games. Not worried one bit.

Uh oh. Not what you want to see with Brady not present and Jimmy G as the #1 QB

Mike Giardi
Was it worse than the KC game in 2014? Or the Oakland game?

I'm not sure if I'm quite as confident as you, but I'm definitely on your side of the fence. Jimmy was too impressive last preseason for me to think he can't be a viable short-term QB. It isn't that uncommon for a QB-in-training to have some rough practices as the team works on certain facets of his game. Once the bullets start really flying, the coaches will focus more on what he can do than what he can't.

Darryl Roberts was a PBU machine in college too.
Yes he is a PBU machine and i really hope that he has something and goes beyond just PBU machine. With proper training......

For a rookie last year JG was fine. He had a nice quick release and was accurate with his short/medium range passes. I didn't expect more than that last year. Without game time he is still basically a rookie. Don't expect the 2nd year bump that players usually have who actually had playing time during the season. Hopefully he plays 4 games in the preseason and that is all! Another year to learn will be just perfect for him!
On a side note, I miss the old days where camp reports came in from the fans. Where you got a better sense of the day than the Brady 9-11 in 1-1, 7-9 in 7-7 11-15 in 11-11 crap. But that is just me I guess!

One thing in JG's favor is that he's been consistently better in games than he has in practice. Another thing is I really believe that JG needs at least one more year sitting behind Brady before he's ready to play at a starting NFL QB's level. I will remind people that Aaron Rogers sat for 3 full years before he got his chance to start, and he came from a major college program which ran a pro style offense. Jimmie played at a division 1AA school (or whatever they call it now) playing mostly schools who's names started with East, North or West.

Lets not all panic after one bad practice in the rain.

Good to hear Dobson's back.

Do people really think Gibson has a shot at making the roster over him? I know injuries played a factor in some of those opinions, but even then I just don't see it.
Gibson has ST value plus he had some decent years.

If Dobson can't stay healthy....

These threads do seem really quiet this year compared to the last two. I remember @Joker did a really good job when he went to camp reporting back. Hopefully he'll be visiting this year too. But even the twitter guys I follow are reporting less. I wonder if they're facing more actions from the club about reporting what they've seen this year.

Matt Cassell was sketchy- sometimes brutal in preseason and in practices. It was said later by BB that he always improved, absorbed a ton of info and steadily made less and less mistakes.

Roberts is already better than the FAs they have brought in.

He hasn't played a game yet. I do think some caution is needed. Bradley Fletcher led the league in PBUs last season. Roberts is looking promising these first two weeks but then so did Sudfeld. I'm hopeful but I want to see him in these pre-season games before I get too excited.

I know...I'm totally jumping the gun. Now that AJ Derby is gone he is my new camp binky.

Fletcher and McClain have NFL experience and have done well. Both were very shaky last year. Scheme, team, physical issues contributed to their play.

I forgot about Terrell Brown. I think he is very good and better than Logan Ryan.

Maybe it is Butler, Brown, Ryan, Player X and Roberts as the 5th DB?

I don't hate Fletcher as my 5th DB

Butler, Brown, Ryan, Fletcher, Roberts is not the world's worst CB grouping. I'll still be scouting CBs in preparation for next years draft though.

RUNNING BACK, that's my concern, especially if Brady gets 4 games, Jimmy G would need a strong run support to chew up the clock and get points in the scoreboard, even if are ugly 17/18 points.

Brandon Gibson is a more proven NFL talent than Dobson at this stage of their careers, Gibson has done alot more with less at QB. P.s. Thursday will be Gibson's 28th birthday.

Agreed. Gibson has the experience and talent to start on "some" teams in the NFL. IMO that equates to at least 5th or 6th WR on the Pats.

Glad to hear Roberts had a good day. If we are going to have a legit good #2 CB I think it is going to be him by the end of the year or just a decent enough JAG in Brown/Ryan opposite Butler.
