Some evaluation of him from today:

-One of the bright spots on Day 1 was center Mike Elgin. The seventh-round draft pick performed well in all the drills. Despite being the smallest offensive lineman on the field, Elgin displayed the most power in strength drills. Elgin plays with tremendous leverage and really uses his hands well. He’s a guy to keep an eye on in future months.

Some Post-draft evaluation from NFLDraftScout.com:

Elgin is undersized and wasn't highly rated coming into the draft. The Patriots are pretty set at center, so the chances of Elgin making the team are minimal.

I hope the kid makes it.

I agree that it would be great if he could make it. I saw him listed as 270 odd. They must like something about him, though. I guess they think he can bulk up the extra 20 lbs. Ah, I found it:

Hmmm, I wonder who the Pats consulted when deciding on this guy...

Ferentz has had a rough go at Iowa lately. I wonder if he'd eventually make his way to the Pat's staff in the future.

Smart kid too.

IOWA CITY -- Two former University of Iowa football players have been named to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's inaugural National Honor Society. The Hawkeye honorees are Mike Elgin and Andy Fenstermaker.

The NFF National Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who maintained a 3.2 GPA or better. A total of 345 players from 195 schools earned recognition as part of the inaugural class.

Elgin, a starting center/guard, was a first-team member of the 2006 Academic All-America team. He is a native of Bankston, IA. Fenstermaker was Iowa's top punter the last two years and a two-time member of the academic all-Big Ten team. He is from Mt. Pleasant, IA.

"The inaugural class of the Honor Society contains an outstanding group of young men who simply set the standard for excellence on and off the field, and we are proud to showcase their accomplishments as a powerful example of football's unique ability to produce the next generation of great leaders," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell.

Ferentz can likely be a HC in the NFL whatever happens at Iowa, his name has a big buzz to it and Iowa isn't a sure fire recruiting school so mediocre results won't hurt him.

Elgin is interesting, we don't have a true backup Center although Hochstein usually gets the job done.

Leverage is HIGHLY underrated...

Maybe, at 270ish, BB projects him as a tight end..can never have enough of them...

Anything's possible, but his main chance with the Pats is to be stashed on the PS until Hochstein or Yates goes elsewhere for more money and playing time.

Absent an injury wave, of course.

6'4" 277 may be on the light side, but it's pretty clear the physical foundation is in place for Heavy Construction Contractors Woicik, Nash, and Davis. Eligin had starts at both Guard and Center. Reiss noted his agility in the wave drill. PushnPencils notes his leverage and hands. Despite Gallery's woes in Joakland, Iowa O-linemen tend to be pretty solid technicians. Add it all up and you can see the outline for Hochstein's heir and even some potential for OT reps.

The one thing I'm noting watching Brian Barthelmes play OC in NFLE, he struggles a bit with leverage at OC when those 6'-6'2" NTs get under his 6'6" frame. He does a good job overall and works hard to gain control in those leverage wars, but he might be too tall to play inside in the NFL - he also seems to wind up on the ground more than I like to see, though that may be in part because he has to bounce back and forth helping both the two Amsterdam OGs on each play since neither one seems capable of handling a one-on-one assignment. I wouldn't be surprised to read about him taking more RT reps in Training Camp, the way he has to help the two OGs he might just as well be playing on the edge.

Elgin apparently plays with great strength and leverage. That's something nice to build off. Put him in the offseason conditioning program for a year or two and he should be a very strong 300 lber that can provide us some depth on the OL. This is why I love having Dante. He can polish those flawed gems into diamonds for us in the future.

I too hope he makes it. Though on the smaller side he seems very athletic and very bright. If anyone can get him bulked up while still maintaining his athleticism it's DS.

This seems to fit the Patriots pattern, to draft most of their OL low, looking for guys who are smart, have the right body type and take well to drill-sergeant coaching. Draft them too high and they won't pass waivers to the PS. An undersized OL drafted in the seventh round will make it through and that's where he can expect to land.

If he does well for a year or two, he might make the roster as a backup, when he's too good to pass waivers. It's a great way to build depth.

i wonder if they have center in mind at all. the have koppen & hochstein, and seem both set and deep at the other 4 positions. none of the interior three are even 27 yet.
IMHO they're planning to resurrect the lineman-as-fullback tactic. i'm thinking lead blacker. there's no indication of this but i bet he can catch the ball.
when is hochstein's contract up?
perhaps they plan to hide elgin on the practice squad, groom him, get him up to 300lbs by the '09 season, and put him in there somewhere.
he does look like a patriot player to me tho.
was he a team captain? is he an academic all-america?
goodbye, marquise hill.
sure, hill's a DL, but i think his developmental roster spot vanished in this draft.

Hill isn't necessarily done yet. We have to see how he does in this year's training camp. If he doesn't show enough development, then he's definitely out on the street; but he does have another training camp to prove himself.

And Barthelmes and Yates. Yates is signed through 2009.

In the end, this 277 pound center has zero chance of making the 53, and little chance of making the Practice Squad, although he will obviously compete for that spot.
WHAT?! What about Gene Mruczkowski?!

John Hannah weighed 265 lbs.
