Day 1 recap: Hey, this class really did suck!

So a bit of a buzzkill day, but then it strikes me: I've spent the past month saying "man, this draft is crap. I really don't like anybody." So hey, for once I really was completely in sync with BB/SP.

I guess that after poring over the prospects and ranking them all relative to one another it's easy to get hung up on intra-draft value, losing sight of how good the players are overall. Yes, some better value on the trades would have been nice. But trading out as a basic strategy is probably sound, if no fun.

On to the action-packed day 2, in which the Patriots have some untradeable picks!

How could the class be that bad? How could millions of football playing high schoolers matriculate into college, play there, and just be head and shoulders worse than other years' classes?

Law of large numbers says that the average is about the same year to year. Maybe it's skewed at the very top, but I don't see how it could be that different.

The Pats felt that there was no "special" talent left from picks 28 to 91. That's why they were comfortable with trading out for future picks.

I've said all along that this draft isn't very deep or very good. The only thing it was deep in was safeties and wide receivers, well guess what we got one of the top safeties, so I see why the Pats decided to call it a day.

Still think we could have wrung out a bit more from the trades but trading for future picks is a sound strategy in a weak draft.

The Pats will be much bigger players on day 2 so get ready for the motherload. I don't see any way 10 draftees will make this team so hopefully they can stock some more future picks.

It could be that bad for a given team. There was a lot of talent of kinds the Patriots weren't looking for -- OGs, speedy little 3-4 LBs, etc. The one deep position that aligned well with the Patriots needs was safety, so voila.

i think thats the pats could have picked some one at 28 but to get the 49ers frist pick maybe a top 15 pick next yer plus save some money to sign samule to a long term deal and get randy moss
