Morons!
By now even the NFL should have caught onto the fact that temperature affects pressure.
Filling balls with hot air inside and using them outside in the cold, they drop in psi.
Filling balls with cold air again outside, they stay the same!
It's the CHANGE in Temperature that affects psi. Delts T is proportional to delta P.
Never minding how accurate or calibrated the pressure gauge is. (Not very!)
Morons.

Still dont get this.

So they reinflated them at half bringing them back to normal, brady then goes out and has a beautiful 2nd half

thus if we were cheating, we didnt get any advantage from it.
And tested again at the end and the balls were legal. So they maybe reinflated to 13.5 and it became legal . this witchhunt along with the leaked 2PSI message has crippled brady's image.. I hate mort and I hate NFL for having the leak happen and not clarify

I don't believe they actually say there and pursue tested 48 game balls, I believe they squeeze tested them and are calling that "checking the game balls." absent actual documentation I will continue to believe that.

How the hell could there even be an investigation then?

What would they compare the pressure to?

I just couldn't understand how the NFL would ever come close to admitting this, particularly at this point.

They could've/should've admitted this--if true, way back in the beginning. No one in the world would've given a damn if the refs claimed that they just squeezed the balls to check. Now they are in way too deep...forensic investigators, etc.

You can bet your ass they will want to know what the pressure was prior to the game. It's going to likely be the very first question.

"You did not meet the 12.5psi requirement, you broke a rule, you broke a rule!" This is like going after someone on the sidelines for untied shoelaces. "You are not up to code, I repeat you are not up to code"

yeah this is amazing

so much for the integrity of the NFL

what a joke league by now

hell even FIFA would have handled this better

I don't understand why they keep saying "11 of 12" when it's been stated that 24 balls were prepped due to the weather conditions.

Were the other 12 just backup balls that weren't in the first half rotation? Were all 24 balls in the rotation? Were all 24 balls tested at halftime? If only 12 were in the first half rotation, were the backup balls under-inflated despite not being used?

This is seriously the dumbest f*cking "scandal" of all-time.
12 are on the field, the other 12 never leaves the refs room which is locked. They reinflated the 11 they still had for the patriots to be used during the second half. I think I have all I need to know. I know what happened and it is not a human being who let the air out. If the Pats intended to bring the pressure down, then it is likely they filled it with warn air before pressure check. Knowing Ernie Adams and co, I will not be surprise they have it down to a science. Knowing game temperature, they know how to fill it up to get Brady comfortable.
Now seeing some of the passes Brady was throwing, I will not be surprise the calculation were a bit off.
That ball Vareen caught was so bad, it looked horrible in the air. Glad they inflated the ball for Brady in the second half.

The question is where did they re-inflate the balls? If they did it inside with warm air, the balls PSI would go down again and the tests at the end of the game would show a lower PSI.

Almost got into a fist fight at the barber's today.

A "coach" was sitting in the chair badmouthing the team, saying how they don't have any good players year after year, and that the only reasonable explanation is that they cheat.

He went on and on how the "integrity of the game is at stake with those balls."

Obviously, I didn't take that well. Within seconds, I had the entire place staring at me as I began to argue back. I'm in the heart of Steeler country over here. I need to tone it down.

...so does this mean Dqwell is incorrect that the Pats were using Colts balls?
I did not even entertain that idea, it was so out of the weeds and so incongruous with all the report.

But any game in sub freezing temps is breaking the rules - unless the continually are monitoring ball pressure and adjusting it - and the balls are below specs. The NFL states the pressure at the start and not messing with it. It does not say they should not change. Also, I still wonder why the Indy balls did not change. I find that suspicious. I don't believe they pumped up the balls outside, brought them inside to measure the pressure (which would go up!) and brought them back outside.

hell even FIFA would have handled this better

The 4th official would have inflated the "offending" ball on the sideline and then carry on as normal, no "investigations" necessary.

Why the underinflate thing is even a rule is bizarre, as long as the ball holds shape when held it should be fine to use.

They went through a very brief update on the status of the investigation. Just because they didn't go through an extensive scientific breakdown of each and every ball and its PSI report doesn't mean they are suddenly going to admit any mistakes made by the league.

If you hadn't noticed, the NFL has had a pretty rough year, and that includes Goodell. They aren't going to do anything to make him or the league look bad.

They've already made it abundantly clear that the refs properly did their jobs, which is why they are confused in the first place. Even if the refs didn't do their jobs, they aren't going to admit it. Haven't you seen Goodell's work in the past?

I will agree with that sentiment.

What bothers me is that the NFL is using a very carefully constructed statement to purposely create a perception that may very well not be accurate. I even believe that the juxtaposition of the previous sentence in their statement...the one where they cite the rule and the specific pressures...was also done intentionally to create that misunderstanding. And I believe this is all part of a strategy to divert attention from the ref, and focus attention on the Patriots (40 interviews, legal team, forensics, etc.).

God, I hope you're right.

I just have absolutely no optimism when it comes to Roger Goodell.

Keep strong, Supafly. Even here in New England it's unbearable wherever you go there is whispers of cheating. Can't imagine what it's like elsewhere.

I blame a lot on the regional media. The people we listen to on our drives to and from work. With the exception of maybe two or three shows combined from WEEI and SportsHub, we've been proclaimed guilty. They wanted confessions today, and anything less meant they would sling mud at BB/Brady and call them liars. They've influenced the more casual fans around here.

they probably tested the balls inside again. Once inside they will go back to original PSI of what they were when filled inside. If they tested them outside it would be lower unless they filled it outside.

As others have mentioned, Rozelle and Tagliabue would've both picked up the phone and called Kraft/Belichick if there were any questions or rumors--and that would've ended it all.

This "enforcer" role that Goodell thinks he's playing is total ********. He's a total madman. Why he'd want to put any of the 32 teams in a bad light is way beyond me. He could've ended any problems with a simple phone call.

Where I live, virtually everyone thinks it's a joke or doesn't care.

I think they very much would mind. This thing is on news channels right after breaking, I find it highly unlikely that it would not be a great big deal if they said they didn't check. After making a huge deal about this great big competitive advantage, to come out and say we don't check would be a great big black eye reported on every national news site. Not to mention the implications that they could only enforce it to intentionally give an advantage.
