Shrine Game News

Chris Kouffman has a very good breakdown of the 10 best Shrine game prospects to watch for Sporting News:

There's the usual Tre McBride rocks piece but I'm banning myself from reporting those for now and prospects like Sam Carter, Tayo Fabuluje, derrick Lott, Xavier Williams get write-ups but I thought his Blake Bell one was interesting:

What was surprising about Bell as the practice week wore on was how smooth and natural he was at running routes and catching the football, considering his newness to the position. He showed athletic body control and the ability to consistently catch the football outside of his frame with his hands. While not necessarily tempted to refer to him as fast, Bell showed good agility and some explosive ability. He jumps well. His blocking was a little uneven during the practice week, however this is to be expected given his continuing transition from the quarterback position. Due to his size and strength, he did show potential in this regard.

He drew comparisons during the practice week to former Shrine Game participant and current Lions tight end Joe Fauria. His Shrine Week participation was cut short by a significant hip injury he suffered diving for a ball on a corner route. Bell has shown a combination of length, body control, fluid athleticism and catch radius similar to that shown by Fauria prior to the injury.

Kentucky OL Darrian Miller is someone I mentioned a while ago.

Apparently he's having a very good Shrine game too.

Haven't watched any of it, but this year seems to mark a shift towards a larger oline...I'd expect done bigger lineman to be drafted this year, although a smaller guy at guard could easily be in the cards...pfft, we'll see.

that's the way I lean too.

Some day 3 notes from Jeff Risdon:

Of note:

Which is exactly what the Pats need.

Very intriguing. And a Navy man, too.

Yum.
Regarding Gaines...poor change of direction and poor safety skills don't project well...

Again, I haven't watched much, but change of direction is kind of important at cb. Smells to me of a bulk up hybrid safety (assuming the tackling is there), or a late round flyer hoping for ST play ultimately developing into a BB type.

I certainly would be happy with press type corners, it's a skill that can't really be taught and typically lends itself towards a hard nosed, whisky drinking attitude. It's just the two you provided from navy seem physically limited.

I think Bell will be much stronger than Fauria. He's been a qb at OU. He hasn't been lifting like a TE would. His dad was a tremendous athlete too. Can't wait to see his combine and pro day. I think with him you have to project what you're going to have in year 2 or 3. Not, what is he at this moment?
