What happened with that 4th quarter 1st down that looked an inch or so short? I know Rex Ryan threw a challenge flag on the play, but the review only looked at the spot, not that the stick went an inch past the ball! I saw an oblique reference to it in an article today, but no explanation of what happened. Does anybody know?

It was a first down. CBS had a bad angle.

@MikePereira
For those upset w/#NEvsNYJ first down spot, the angle on TV was not down the line. If it was, you probably would have seen a first down.

They need to get more cameras on the field. Maybe they can do a car wash or have a bake sale to raise the money.

It was two things:
1) As previously mentioned, CBS wasn't shooting straight down the line of the spot and the camera parallax made the stick look further ahead than it was relative to the ball.

2) The ref (who I think is a rookie) totally botched the signal. Every time I can remember, when a measurement is taken, the ref, immediately after observing the ball, straightens up right there and signals the upcoming down (and if a first down, will give the whole-arm standard first down attained signal).

This ref didn't do that. After making the measurement he makes no signal at all and starts jogging to his position. If you look at the replay you can see during his jog he flashes a "one" with his index finger a couple of times, but he does it right in front of his abdomen. Only when he gets into his position does he give the standard whole-arm first-down signal.

I loved that after the initial bad angle they switched to an even worse one.
Yeah, same thing on the face mask. Gruden says he can't see it, they cut to an angle from outer space where the players look like ants and say "Nope don't see it."

At least they can back and showed a good angle 20min later.

Well, I'd ask Trent bildoefer his opinion but the last I saw of him he had a snorklemask and flippers on and was seen disappearing into Peytie Pooch's colon area....
