New Trade Up Strategy

Does anyone think it could happen that we package our picks but don't jump to to the top 10, but up to like 16 from the Packers or 17 from the Jags and get their 2nd rounder. The Pack would do it because they need the RB Lynch he's falling and they need a huge influx of talent for Favre's final run.

That way we can jump up and get a better choice in the inevitable run of corners/safties and then in the 2nd, we get one of the 2nd tier LBs like David Harris or Siler or etc.

I haven't seen this idea suggested anywhere, but this is the unthought of strategy that the Brain Trust is likely to pull.

As you may have guessed, at least one other regular here had the same thought. It's a valid one given the 6 year contract available at 16 and higher. The trick is figuring out who BB might move up to get. His highest drafted CB is Eugene Wilson (drafting for New England, I don't pay any attention to whom he drafted working for another team). No other secondary position has been drafted before round three, and this from a man who takes a secondary position in 86% of his drafts, you'd think taking them that often he would want to go for a purportedly more talented player. So Secondary seems unlikely to get him thinking of about bundling two first round picks to move up. DE/NT might have the value he likes, but the need doesn't seem that critical. TE, LB, OG, OC, OT, RB, QB, don't seem to be worth a move up either.

In fact, I think many if not most of us like the idea. The trick to me is the other side of the equation. You trade down either because you don't especially like anybody you see or because you like a bunch of guys equally and think they'll still be around. Looking at Green Bay in particular (because the #16 pick is of the valuable 6-year-contract variety):

Primary needs are RB, DT, S, TE and maybe CB.

How good does that look at #24 and #28? Frankly, not great. The major talents at RB and TE should be long gone. The top CBs are likely gone. You might, just maybe grab Harrell at DT or Griffin at S -- but probably not both. While at #16 you should find a couple out of RB Lynch, TE Olsen, DT Harrell, S Nelson and one of the top CBs. Then the middle of round 2 should be a fine place to pick up a good safety or maybe an RB like Leonard. So if I'm Green Bay I'm not too tempted unless the Patriots sweeten the deal.

My friend what you are describing is known as the Sebman trade

This would send 24+28 to GB for 16+47

Really, it's going to depend on who's on the board. I could see them making the trade and I could see them not being interested, we'll have to wait and see.
