2015 NFL Mock Drafts

I have posted Markus Golden before in previous mocks.

After watching the Green Bay game, the New England Patriots need to focus on the pass rush with regard to the defense.

After watching the Green Bay game, I am not convinced by any of the offensive guards currently on the New England Patriots roster let alone practice squad: Connolly, Wendell, Kline, Devey, Barker

Ryan Wendell is acceptable as the backup center to Bryan Stork.

Don't disagree with anything you said there. Do you think we could use a WR instead of a rb in 3-4 round area? Seem ok at rb. Would have been nice for Amendola to step up or Dobson to stay on the field.

The lack of patience on the PatsFans message board with the development of wide receivers is most taxing. As for wide receivers, why can't the New England Patriots develop at least one undrafted free agent wide receiver as opposed to trading a second round draft pick for Welker or spending gobs of money on Amendola?

Jonas Gray so far looks like the New England Patriots version of Timmy Smith. Brandon Bolden does nothing for me as a running back. James White has done nothing aside from garbage time against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dane Brugler has 6 receivers going in the 1st round in his most recent mock:

9. Amari Cooper, Alabama
15. DeVante Parker, Louisville
16. Kevin White, West Virginia
18. Jaelen Strong, Arizona St.
26. Doral Green-Beckham, Oklahoma
31. Devin Funchess, Michigan (to the Pats)

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/...iders-own-sole-possession-of-no-1-pickfor-now

He also has Manx binky Owamagbe Odighizuwa going #21 overall, as one of 12 1st round DLs:

1. Leonard Williams, USC
3. Randy Gregory, Nebraska
5. Shane Ray, Missouri
11. Vic Beasley, Clemson
14. Dante Fowler, Florida
19. Shawn Oakman, Baylor
20. Shilique Calhoun, Michigan St.
21. Owamagbe Odighizuwa, UCLA
23. Malcolm Brown, Texas
25. Alvin Dupree, Kentucky
27. Eddie Goldman, Florida St.
29. Danny Shelton, Washington

Rob Rang has the same 6 receivers going in the 1st round, in different order, along with 10 defensive linemen (he leaves out Malcolm Brown, Shilique Calhoun and Odighizuwa, and adds Danielle Hunter).

I'm a bit disturbed that both of them have WRs going to the Pats (Strong per Rang).
If you don't have an offensive line that can protect the franchise, I don't care who the f***ing rookie is playing wide receiver.

2014 was the draft to select a wide receiver and not wait until the seventh round to select one.

I would've settled for Jeff Janis instead of Halapio and Jemea Thomas..

Let's wait until the sixth round to draft an offensive guard and settle for Marcus Cannon and Jordan Devey as the opening day starters. Brilliant!

Meanwhile, the two offensive linemen that the vast majority of posters wanted to upgrade, Connolly and Wendell, are currently the two starting offensive guards.

Most starting guards are found in the middle rounds Tipp. I looked at the starting guards of all 12 playoff teams at this moment. NE, Cincy, Indy, Denver, SD and Miami. Philly, GB, Ariz, Atl, Sea and Detroit. There are two guards starting who were 1st rounders. Neither was drafted as a guard. Miami drafted Mike Pouncey to play center. James Carpenter was drafted as a tackle and he's not really that good anyway. Just because you need a G, doesn't mean you have to take one in the first round.

I certainly applaud prioritizing the OL above WRs. No doubt. But the Pats did a pretty solid job adding Bryan Stork and Cam Fleming last year. 2 more additions like that would go a long way.

There are 2 rookie linemen who have stepped in and who are playing at a near-pro bowl level this year: Zach Martin and Joel Bitonio. Both binkies on this board last year. I have absolutely no problem taking someone like TJ Clemmings if the Pats think he can step in immediately at that level, like Mankins did in 2005. Otherwise, I'm ok adding a couple of solid guys like Stork and Fleming. But I would certainly not want to go WR (or RB, which other draftniks have mocked to the Pats in the 1st) ahead of OL and DL.

I'm not a WR guy, but so far my favorite guy that I've watched film of has been Manx binky DeAndre Smelter, who just tore his ACL. Really physical split end, reminds me a bit of Anquan Bolden, and that's as close to WR binkydom as it gets for me. He has only 2 years of college football experience and plays for Georgia Tech so his route running is obviously raw, but if he has the work ethic and drive then I think that will be fixable in time. Should be a cheap pickup, especially given his injury. Dorial Green-Beckham will probably come out and go 1st round (or at least top 50), while Smelter will go late round/UDFA.

Here is a mock:

1. Trade it for a 1st next year 3rd and 5th
2a. Carl DAVIS, DT, Iowa Massive space eating man with mobility
3a. Tyler LOCKETT K. State - WR - small nifty guy Desean Jackson-esque. This would be a controversial pick.
3b. Jake Fisher OT Oregon
3s. Paul Dawson OLB TCU
4a. Jarvis Harrison OT/OG Texas A&M
4b. Jeff Heurmann TE Ohio State
5. BJ Finney C/G K. State
6. Stephone Anthony LB Clemson
7. Mike Hull LB PSU
7. Nick Perry S Alabama

At this very moment, in no specific order i think we draft a RB, slot, wideout, guard, DE, ILB, and SS

This year's draft is really a head scratcher for me in terms of what we need. I guess that speaks to the level of talent we have put on the field. More than "need" i am thinking i might just go where could we use greater competition/depth.

I also believe BB really wanted to see what the nickle would look like with Nink-Easley-Jones-Hightower-Collins-Mayo out there.

Assumptions: Revis, McCourty, Vereen, Ayers, Slater, Cassilias, Ghost and Connolly all return.
Restructure/Extend: Mayo, Ghost
Gone: Amendola.

This leaves us thin (ish) at: OG, WR, TE, RB (maybe) and LB

I actually sat down to try and make some picks... and i didn't know where to start.

WR? Yep especially with Dobson's injury woes... but 1st/2nd round?
RB? Yep if Ridley goes... but if he stays would we really make a move?
TE?
OG? Yep definitely needs to be addressed. But the Connolly/Wendel combo has been pretty effective this year to date
OT? Possibly but not in the 1st 3-4 picks
DE? Not really. Nink, Jones, Ayres, Buchannon, Moore and a bit of Hightower.
DT? A lot of bodies there. What if Branch comes back?
LB? Thin here yes but we have 3 top notch starters.
CB? Ton of talent and very deep
S? Same as above. If Chung and McCourty are back then the depth is there.

I honestly don't know where to start and we currently are sitting on 9 picks.

I'd like to come away with a WR, TE (all round) and OG. But in what round and who i just don't know atm.

Devin Funchess TE/WR, Sheldon Day DT, Todd Gurley RB (if he slips). Are all 1st day looks.

But i am honestly stumped here atm guys.

The draft shouldn't be driven too hard by need, and not having too many glaring needs gives the Pats flexibility to move around and find the values. In general, I'd prefer a draft focused on the OL and DL on day 1-2, with some quality developmental depth added on day 3. I can see a need for a starting LG in 2015, and starting LDE and NTs in 2016 (VW will turn 35 that year, and Rob Ninkovich will be 32). Draft them this year and give them a year to train up. The goal should be staying ahead so that you don't have too many acute needs that you need to plug in the draft.

I think that day 3 is one of the keys to a successful draft. BB seems to love day 3, and he makes an effort to have some flexibility there (consider the trade backs in 2012 and 2013 to get some picks in that area). Adding starters and quality depth like Bryan Stork, Cam Fleming, Zach Moore, Nate Ebner, Alfonzo Dennard and LeGarrette Blount (a day 3 trade) is very important.

Right now I'm beginning to get a sense about some day 3 guys who I like:

- WR DeAndre Smelter, Georgia Tech - a day 1/2 talent who has flown under the radar and who now has a torn ACL; may need a red shirt year, but well worth it (Manx deserves all the credit for this one)
- RB Matt Jones, Florida - a big bruiser who can pass protect and who has decent hands, he could add a dimension that the Pats' RBs currently lack
- DE/OLB Noah Spence, Ohio St. - this one with an asterix; he would need to be checked out carefully, and I'd only pull the plug on day 3, but the skill set is interesting
- OG Laken Tomlinson, Duke - not flashy, but very solid; I think he'd made a solid RG
- S Jaquiski Tartt, Samford - he might require a 3rd round pick, but he has nice size and a good skill set, with a lot of upside

There are plenty more. Adrian Amos, Durrell Eskridge, Tony Lippett, David Cobb, David Johnson and Shiquille Riddick, for example.

Give me 3 linemen on day 1-2 and then fill in the rest and I'm happy. Some combination of DE's Dante Fowler, Alvin Dupree, Danielle Hunter or Shilique Calhoun, DTs Malcolm Brown, Jordan Phillips, Eddie Goldsmith or Danny Shelton (and possibly Carl Davis) , and OLs Brandon Scherff, TJ Clemmings, La'el Collins, Ty Sambrailo, Cameron Erving, Spencer Drango, Ereck Flowers, Jake Fisher and Jarvis Harrison would work fine.

Even without Vereen and Ridley, the Pats still have Gray, Blount, Bolden, White, Tyler Gaffney, and Develin under contract or pending RFA tenders.

Blount's return, Gray showing something and Gaffney on waivers really lowers the need. Would like a RB who is good in the passing game. Most rookies aren't. Just bring Vereen back on a reasonable deal.

1. Markus Golden DE - this pick could be GOLDEN
2. Carl Davis - DT Iowa
3. Tre Jackson - OG FSU
3s. Tyler Lockett - WR KSU
4t. Jarvis Harrison - OG/OT Texas A&M
4b. Jeff Huermann - TE THE Ohio State University
5. Matt Jones - RB Florida
6. Kaleb Johnson - OG - RUTGERS, yep
7. Nick Perry - S- Alabama

Dan Connolly will be 33 years old next season and will be an unrestricted free agent. Marcus Cannon was a flop at the offensive guard position and will be an unrestricted free agent. Jordan Devey was a flop at the offensive guard position. Josh Kline can't even beat out Ryan Wendell at the offensive guard position.

When Joe Andruzzi departed in unrestricted free agency, the New England Patriots selected Logan Mankins in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. The New England Patriots don't have the luxury to wait two to three years to develop a mid round draft selection at the offensive guard position. The New England Patriots need at least one "plug and play" offensive guard in the 2015 NFL Draft and an upgrade to Ryan Wendell would be also be welcomed.

I agree with you to some extent, though the Pats found 2 guys in the 4th round this year (of a particularly deep draft, to be sure) who have pretty much plugged in from the beginning, barring injuries. I think that someone like Laken Tomlinson or Jarvis Harrison would have a pretty short learning curve. But I'd also like a stud with some upside on day 1 or 2.
