Does having Ed Hochuli as the head referee make you reconsider the possible score/outcome of the game? This is better news for the Packers than it is with the Patriots (given the pats propensity for committing penalties this year). Given that Ed's crew seems to be more focused on offensive penalties, it might not be as bad as it sounds (as our infractions that he has a higher % of calling doesn't seem to be the Pats issue..as much).

Still, it my gut says this is no help to our team and the Packers do enjoy a solid HFA to begin with. Still, the make-up of the Patriots players can nullify the field/weather conditions, just have to deal with the noise.

Veteran referee Ed Hochuli has been assigned to work Sunday's game between the Patriots and Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. This is the first Patriots game of the season for Hochuli, No. 85 in your officiating program and arguably the league's most recognized referee in part because of his prolific use of the microphone.

Through Week 12 games, Hochuli's crew ranks second among 17 crews in terms of most penalties called. So if that holds true to form, we should expect plenty of flags Sunday.

Hochuli's crew is tied for the NFL lead in facemask and offensive pass interference penalties, and has called more ineligible-man-downfield and roughing-the-kicker penalties than any other crew.

As for the Patriots, they had 11 accepted penalties last Sunday against the Detroit Lions. They now have 95 accepted penalties on the season, which keeps them on pace to smash the previous high for the team under Bill Belichick (111, in 2003).

In contrast, the Packers have been called for 64 accepted penalties this season.

Rather Hochuli than Blakeman, Triplette, Coleman or Boger.

Would have been nice to have one of Steratore or Vinovich though.

It's not the worst outcome, actually, and with the success that Browner and Revis have had in tight man coverage, it could work for us. Given that I predicted a 42-27 game in alamo's thread, I don't expect that any ref is going to affect the bottom line so much.

Our receivers don't push off much, and most of the OPIs we've had tend to be on LaFell picking on Amendola's receptions early in the season IIRC.

I don't think it will necessarily give the Packers an advantage but it might kill the viewing experience for everybody if they go completely flag happy. It completely kills the flow of the game when you have a 30 penalty game. Call the big stuff but let them play.

That is exactly the problem. Hoch is a drama queen who cannot and will not call a game without leaving his personal mark on it. I guarantee there will be an incident which will involve him explaining an infraction extensively, and interrupting the flow of the game.

Hope everyone is prepared for the game to last an hour longer now though!

"Yes, there are penalties in the Pro Bowl"

Or how could we forget this 10 minute bout of nonsense from the San Fran game a couple of years ago?:

When I go to tape this game on my DVR, I'm hoping that under the "extend recording time" option that I'll have one long enough to record a Hochuli game. Maybe 90 minutes will do it.

I want to be Ed Hochuli

A referee with a barrel chest, chizzled jaw, and bermese pythons for arms...

I want to be Ed Hochuli

i was rooting for boger

Hockaloogie will completely take the spotlight off the advertised matchup. The NFL spends weeks hyping this game and then assigns the most unconscious sports narcissist in the world to ref it. No rhyme, no reason.

"No pick plays!"

Ok!

Having Ed "Hercule" is fitting as this is a "Clash of the Titans" game.

Well, it could be worse. Better Hochuli than Boger. Still a shame though, not sure it gives the Packers an advantage so much as it basically guarantees the game will be less fun to watch. But yeah, definitely not pumped - I'm sure we'll see Gronk get flagged at some point today.

Someone needs to teach Hochaloogie how to spot a damn ball correctly. Disgraceful.
