2015 Draft Prospect Thread

Doesnt it depend on DMC? Long term deal with him should remove all needs for a FS?

It's funny because within five minutes of posting what I did, I saw a piece by Bucky Brooks wondering whether he's the next Ed Reid. I didn't share because there wasn't that much backing the theory up apart from the number of interceptions.

It's a hell of a dilemma though isn't it. The guy might be an elite centrefield safety like Earl Thomas but can't tackle a lick, presumably because of a long-term injury issue. Do you keep him on your board or not?

I saw the Brooks article too, plus Holliman has been getting big press from Matt Miller, Chad Reuter, and others.

If Holliman declares, I think you check him out very thoroughly from a medical standpoint, then decide whether he is on your board or not. Regardless, I don't think Holliman is the player who best suits the Pats, assuming McCourty is extended.

I'm not really talking about us, I was thinking more generally.

Daniel Jeremiah has another offensive lineman worth putting on your watch list:

Speaking of offensive linemen to put on our list, I was going to add Notre Dame OL Ronnie Stanley, who Josh Norris thinks could be a top-50 selection:

Watch out for Stanley as a potential top-50 selection. I really liked what I saw from him as a right tackle last year, and he seemingly made an easy transition to the left side. Stanley has plenty of length and knows how to use it, usually hitting his aiming point immediately. I think lower half footwork is a bit of a perfectionist discussion, especially compared to functional strength, but Stanley can mirror laterally against outside/in rushers. He is surprisingly strong in the running game as well.

Interesting line from Jared Stanger of Fieldgulls on TJ Clemmings:

Manx, I had forgotten that Tyron Smith had only played RT before being taken at #9 in 2011 by Dallas. Mea culpa.

So had I.

On a side note, did you see that Aaron Lynch and Marcus Martin are doing well for the 49ers. Lynch played every down in their last game and I think Martin is starting at centre. Some good upside picks by the 49ers there.

Lynch has been a big surprise to me, and a good example of how hard it is to scout a player. I thought Martin struggled in his first game at center against the Rams, but he seems to be settling in. I liked him as a prospect, though I'm very happy with Bryan Stork a full round later.

On the theme of how hard it is to scout a player:

New York Jets rookie safety and first-round draft pick Calvin Pryor has been chronically late for meetings this season, according to ESPN.

Pryor was benched against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a 20-13 win where Jaiquawn Jarrett had two interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery.

Pryor played no snaps on defense and just lined up on special teams. Jarrett played every snap on defense.

"We were trying to line up guys that we think deserve it, whether it's in the classroom, on the practice field, or in meetings, being on time for meetings," Jets coach Rex Ryan when asked why Jarrett over Pryor. "[Jarrett] does a great job. He's dependable and has been playing well. Those are the reasons we do that. We thought we were going to play all of them, but it really never turned out [that way]. We just played the hot hand."

Pryor has no interceptions, no forced fumbles and no fumble recoveries after being drafted 18th overall out of Louisville.

Pretty big fan of DE Mike Reilly out of William and Mary. Hopefully he stays in those mid rounds.

So here's a question. Why "Varsity" and not "Versity"? We don't call it a UnivArsity do we?

That's my random musing done for the day.

Heh. Good stuff.

The word is derived from University, of course...

Not the first time that English or its OffSpring ~ American ~ has taken a left turn.

Why can't he be a 4-3 DE?

It was obviously very limited viewing but I thought he lacked a bit of flexibility for a 4-3 end. Just looked like he'd function better in a 3-4. Just a hunch on my part, nothing I'd take to the bank.

Rob Rang has LSU junior DE/OLB Danielle Hunter up to #32 on his big board:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/...oard-stock-soaring-for-mizzous-ray-wvus-white

I haven't watched enough of Hunter to form an opinion yet. But that makes 9 DEs or DE/OLBs on Rang's top 32:

1. Leonard Williams, USC (DE/DT)
2. Randy Gregory, Nebraska
9. Vic Beasley, Clemson
10. Shane Ray, Missouri
11. Shawn Oakman, Baylor
14. Dante Fowler, Florida
18. Bud Dupree, Kentucky
31. Shilique Calhoun, Michigan St.
32. Danielle Hunter, LSU

2 other DEs just miss the top 32 cut:

DE/DT Arik Armstead, Oregon
DE/OLB Lorenzo Mauldin, Louisville

Those 11 players are also all in the top 50 on NFL DraftScout's rankings, plus Utah DE/OLB Nate Orchard at #41 and Washington DE/OLB Hauoli Kikaha at #50. DE/DT Mario Edwards is ranked #55 and appears to be rising now that he is healthy.

Compare with the 2011 and 2012 classes, which were both strong in these areas:

2011

2. Von Miller, Texas A&M (Denver)
3. Marcell Dareus, Alabama (Buffalo) (DE/DT)
7. Aldon Smith, Missouri (SF)
11. JJ Watt, Wisconsin (Houston) (DE/DT)
13. Nick Fairley, Auburn (Detroit) (DE/DT)
14. Robert Quinn, North Carolina (St. Louis)
16. Ryan Kerrigan, Purdue (Washington)
18. Corey Liuget, Illinois (San Diego) (DE/DT)
20. Adrian Clayborn, Iowa (Tampa Bay)
24. Cameron Jordan, Cal (New Orleans) (DE/DT)
30. Muhammad Wilkerson, Temple (NY Jets) (DE/DT)
31. Cameron Heyward, Ohio St. (Pittsburgh) (DE/DT)
37. Jabaal Sheard, Pittsburgh (Cleveland)
39. Akeem Ayers, UCLA (Tennessee)
42. Brooks Reed, Arizona (Houston)
51. Da'Quan Bowers, Clemson (Tampa Bay)

2012

12. Fletcher Cox, Mississippi St. (Philadelphia) (DE/DT)
15. Bruce Irvin, West Virginia (Seattle)
16. Quentin Coples, North Carolina (NY Jets)
18. Melvin Ingram, South Carolina (San Diego)
19. Shea McClellin, Boise St. (Chicago)
21. Chandler Jones, Syracuse (NE)
25. Dont'a Hightower, Alabama (NE)
26. Whitney Mercilus, Illinois (Houston)
28. Nick Perry, USC (Green Bay)
35. Courtney Upshaw, Alabama (Baltimore)
36. Derek Wolfe, Cincinnati (Denver) (DE/DT)
38. Andre Branch, Clemson (Jacksonville)
49. Kendall Reyes, Connecticut (San Diego) (DE/DT)
59. Vinny Curry, Marshall (Philadelphia)
