Huh?

"Eating Pot Roast- Exposing An Overrated and Flawed Run D"

The New England Patriots offense could not run the football worth a damn against the Denver Broncos.

Should have gone with "Exposing an Overrated Pass Rush"

I would guess that he's being sarcastic, Tippett, which is why he's received a lot of "funny" ratings.

Either way, it was cool to see some breakdowns from a very good poster.

Well guys I crushed that prediction huh?
I wouldn't be too hard on yourself mate. I thought Williams was the disruptive guy up front. Perhaps there is light at the end of the prediction tunnel. FTR, I failed miserably with my 120 yard rushing prediction.

Hahaha yeah I was def laughing at myself, but thanks for the nice words, ya big bunch of sweeties.

I'll have some time this afternoon to look over the all-22 of the game. Anyone have any requests for what they'd like me to focus on?

Hmm ... grateful for anything.

But thoughts on the play of the O-line and the running game (such as it was) would be particularly appreciated. Was it just that the Broncos were in a lot closer formations than you predicted or was it that the O-line was not able to generate momentum on running downs against individual opponents?

That's nice of you. I have a couple of requests that would go to answer some questions that are in the back of my mind.

1. Tell me more about Domminic Easly - Do you see a burst off the LOS? Does he get into the backfield on his pass rush. Do the Pats even utilize him as a penetrator, or was he playing playing more conservatively. Also evaluate his pass rush

2. Give us an evaluation of Bryan Stork's game

3. Who had the better game Talib or Revis?

4. Why do you think the run game didn't work?

BTW- Don't beat yourself up for your prediction. You certainly weren't alone in thinking the run game was critical to any success of the offense. . Also when you do your evaluation of the all 22, please create a separate thread for the answers to my questions and all the others you are sure to get

Thanks in advance

Easley. I thought he was very disruptive in the first quarter and would love to see what you thought.

Also want to know if you see holes in our run defense because of Walker or is it just me.

How did Lafell get behind the defense at least twice(1st drive and before the amendola pick) so easily?

On the 22, does Amendola seem more useful and show him in a better light than what we have all been lead to believe as a disappointing season from him so far?

I second this. Manning didn't see it coming either, so don't feel too bad about it.

It would be nice to look at Malcolm Butler's contribution if at all possible.

getting back to the topic at hand, I am somewhat consoled by something I recently recalled BB saying back in the Antwain Smith days of 2001-3. If you recall Smith was a big banging RB who rarely exceeded 4ypc, but was good on the GL and in short yardage. Now IIRC in an interview or presser the question came up about the running game....or lack thereof. It certainly wasn't spectacular when Smith was here.

But BB basically said that the running game, despite the fact it didn't put great stats, was very effective for the Pats for the following reasons.

1. It rarely lost yardage
2. It was mostly successful in GL and short yardage situations
3. and by doing that it helped win the time of possession battle (more important in those days than now),
4. beat up and tired the defense. making their pass rush less effective in 4th quarters
5. legitimized the play action passing game.
6. Kept fumbles to a minimum
i
So as long as it was capable of doing those things, BB was fine with it. In other words, It was OK if the Pats rushed 30 times for "only" 80-90yds, as long as they picked up enough 3rd and 2's. and didn't turn over the ball. For BB the 30 attempts was just as important as the 80 yds gained, just as long as most of the attempts yielded positive yardage.

So while the run game was pretty futile vs Denver, it did enough to legitimize the PAP game. The part of the offensive game that WAS the key to success. In the future the run game will have to improve, but the point is that it doesn't have to be great to be EFFECTIVE

I agreed, but Smith was better in goal line and wearing down the defense than anyone we have now. He was big and fast. If not for his attitude, he might have been a star.

I may be mistaken, but I don't believe Revis gave up a completion while in coverage after the first scoring drive where he gave up 3 for 53 yards.

Talib was routinely picked on during the game by both Gronk and Edelman, and would have given up a TD to Edelman had the ball not been dropped. He was also penalized once trying to cover Gronkowski.
