I really don't get how 40% of people can think this ...

http://www.livescience.com/46123-many-americans-creationists.html

Four in 10 Americans believe God created the Earth and anatomically modern humans, less than 10,000 years ago, according to a new Gallup poll.
About half of Americans believe humans evolved over millions of years, with most of those people saying that God guided the process. Religious, less educated, and older respondents were likelier to espouse a young Earth creationist view — that life was created some 6,000 to 10,000 years ago — according to the poll.
Though the percentage of people who believe in creationism has changed little over the decades, the percentage of people who believe humans evolved without God has more than doubled, and the percentage who believe in God-guided evolution has decreased.

I think God created man about 6,000-10,000 yrs ago. But the earth could be much much older than that. I believe God cast Satan and his angels out of heaven and to the earth. So Satan was already on earth for Genesis 1:1-2. How long before man was here? I don't know. And how old is the earth? I don't know but it could be very old.

I have my doubts about the survey methodology here. 4 out of 10 do not think this.

That's not what the survey said. The question referenced human beings not earth. Whether you accept or reject evolution there is a finite period of time humans in modern form have existed and that time would have to be less than the age of earth. We're looking at around 8,000 years ago the humans separated from other primates and started building towns, civilizations, etc.

If Satan was already here, and already had dominion and the earth along with his God given power to deceive all of mankind, how could God also give man dominion in Gen 1?

Read up a little dude. Most people don't think that a couple of near-chimps got together with other near-chimps and build some ancient town.

We're no doubt a youngish species, making our last big anatomical changes about 200,000 years ago. The date that we separated from other primates would be earlier. Humans, gorillas, chimps, oorangutans, and bonobos split off about 15 million years ago; the rest split off from the oorangs 8 million years ago, and we split off from the other apes nearly 6 million years ago (the genus homo plus australopithecus.) The genus was fully distinct 2.5 million years ago, and archaic homo sapiens showed up about a half million years ago.

"civilization" and the anatomical development of the species are two very different things. We didn't just say to a bunch of chimps "Screw you guys, I'm going home" and then invent a home to go to.

You're at least in the right order of magnitude for the length of human settlement, but here's some news on a dig in turkey with a temple complex dating to about 9,500 BCE (11,500 years ago).

I think the # you went with above is a time period that was used to date civilization/settlements/etc. prior to some more recent discoveries. This "dating game" is just a matter of who had lasting stuff when. I would not be surprised if the date of earliest settlement got pushed back another 20,000 years tomorrow. It's just a matter of what lasting evidence they left and how/whether it got preserved.

Given the OP, it's silly to just skip over any amount of time we spent as hunter-gatherers but were a distinct species.

That should scare the crap out of any democracy. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. But what's even scarier is that there's a concerted anti-scientific effort, channeled specifically through the conservative movement and the Republican party.

You know.... the same guys who continually complain that we're "dumbing down" this and that based on communication styles and instructional design.

Have you ever been in an inner-city school? I realize you have a need to ascribe all problems in the universe to the stupidity of those that think differently from you, but this is just unsupportable prejudice on your part.

You saw Greatest I Am interviewed ... I saw it.

Homo sapiens alone appeared 200,000 years ago

I think they pushed that back a bit further but no argument as we are close enough.

That type of information is what would likely pop up in creation discussions when comparing the various creation myths in Religious studies class.

Yes and we all know that red necks make the best physicists.

We give out kids the best in cell phones but can't ask them to read the instructions for them.

Good parenting that.

You should post in the political forum ... we have a few atheists over there and several holy rollers.

The atheists in that forum don't even know why they are atheists to begin with lol.
