Not surprised about this. Like I said in the other thread, Ryan is a good tackler, he reads the QB well, and he has good hands. Has all the tools to convert to SS...

Eh, he'd be average size for it. Most teams don't have a Kam Chancellor running around out there.

They should cycle all of the db's around except Revis so it confuses the heck out of the offense and also to keep the players fresh (like some teams cycle the dline).

DMac is a stud, QBs are afraid to throw to him(only 18 targets last yr) range and closing speeds make it difficult for all QBs to throw it deep. He is great in the deep shells, espically as the center fielder or the single high safety.

Ryan fits the Cover 1 safety role really nicely, he is quick enough to be a robber and he can match up against TEs and WRs in the slot well, he is also decent against the run and proved to be an effective blitzer last year. In that role he has the chance to be a true playmaker. I think Harmon and Ryan will split snaps because Harmon is better in two deep safety looks.

Here are my Notes on Harmon
- Good tackler\hitter, He rarley misses and tackles low
- Fits 2 Deep safety role or cover 2 mold well
- Doesn't have the quickness of Ryan to play in a robber role
- Average Man coverage ability
- Provides decent run support
- He doesn't have great closing speeds but he gets to the ball on time
- Calm player
- Good at recognizing plays

Tavon Wilson has flashed ability, but he is to much of a risk an zone coverages to play him.

This video shows McCourty's range, he read the QBs eyes stayed aware of the WR and closes in, when the ball is under thrown he adjusts perfectly and makes a play for the ball.

I don't care about Ryan moving to safety in itself--if that's what Belichick wants to experiment with, although I'd probably just rather see a safety drafted to be honest.

Going into the draft, the Patriots (and I would assume all teams) ideally like to have their roster "set" so that they're not forced to reach on any given position. That plan can include signing free agents or making trades, though I would say this is another branch of that strategy. If they project that Ryan can play safety and they're reasonably confident with that prospect, they can draft a safety if one they like falls to wherever they're drafting. If all the safeties they like are gone by 29, they can do something else and Ryan is their contingency. Just my theory anyway.

McCourty is good against the run so if they were to use one of the safeties closer to the line I am sure it would be him over Logan Ryan, but most times the Patriots play two deep so as you have said and I have as well I do not think it makes much of a difference. Last season Gregory had 0 run stuffs (actually, he had 0 in his tenure here) so it is not as if he was TJ Ward and playing in the box shutting down the run.

In the past two seasons, McCourty has had 5 forced fumbles and 5 run stuffs so he was effective as a stopper. Personally, I think a tandem of McCourty and Ryan is a significant upgrade over McCourty and Gregory. If Logan Ryan is the player he showed himself to be last season he is a playmaker in multiple phases of the game – 1.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 5 interceptions, 10 pass defends, and 1 run stuff. That is the perfect type of player to have at the safety position. Two of the best safeties in the NFL McCourty and Thomas entered the NFL as CBs taken in the first round.
