Every NFL team is going defense first in free agency

Or better yet... they keep going all defense, and the nice talent pool of WR's in this draft will actually come down low enough for us to snag one with some pure talent as opposed to another blue collar project that ends up putting up 1000 yards due to our system and TB and signs with our arch-rival when BB realizes he's not worth his market value because he's not purebred talent.

There are two very FAST WR's in this draft. Something I always wanted us to have.

Let's be honest. No matter what moves we make in FA, or in the draft, we're not ending up with a defense to rival the 49ers, Seahawks or even Panthers. And neither will the Donkeys or any other NFL team.

So....why not overload on offense? At least it will be fun to watch.

Huh?

Might want to rethink that one.

I don't think they have the pass rush yet. But they get one good DE and they'll be right there.

Agreed - and if Wilfork isn't there we still have to address run D in the middle

Wilfork, if healthy, is a rare talent but I have to think Belichick has a plan B, which likely includes the draft at both NT (for future depth at the very least) and pass rush... and there's always trades that can be considered too

We should be able to pick up a WR or TE, OL for cheap, maybe even extra competition for offensive players that got caught in a defensive market.

I wish the damn draft was sooner. The draft board is likely to be different by May, therefore unpredictable. No good reason for it to change, outside of arrests, but you know it does and it effects a lot of the panicking teams, distorting who's available and who isn't.

I was taking a look at the FA tracker and it seems that Seattle definitely set the tone and every body is going defense.

The top FA's are almost all gone, that means we won't be able to fix entirely our needs, the biggest miss is on Ward in my opinion. I would even give him priority over Talib.

So now what's left? Maybe go on the opposite direction and put the coins on offense? With an offense like Denver had last year, would Brady be able to win Seattle only with offense? In spite of the 3 rings we won with defense, we almost got 2 with only offense as well and we had a great shot in 2010 too, unfortunately that lost to the Jets, lets say, wasn't on the plans.

So I don't think it's only defense, or only offense, we all know a balanced team is the ideal but most of the time teams have one side of the ball stronger than the other. In Seattle's case, they had a great QB, but still young and developing, their defense on the other hand is already a top 2 of all times. So that's a case when you focus on your defense.

In NE, having Brady, the GOAT, not giving him the best weapons to work with, is kind of wasting our best asset. I would love to have a dominant defense again, but that's far far away currently. Maybe turning the focus to a 35 avg points offense again would give us a better chance over the next 2 years.
We went all in on offense in '07, it has always been my opinion that the team should have stayed defense first. Back in the SB winning days this team was a run orientated defensive team with Brady as a game manager. It won SB's and can again. Brady is so good he doesn't need top flight WR's to put points up on the board. Back in the day he only had to put up maybe 21 points a game, many games were kind of boring and methodical grind it out pass when neccessary 17 to 10 affairs

In response to PatriotSeven:

I will take this D right now - and say that it matches in ANY D in big play potential - even our bad D's were good at turning the ball over - this D SHOULD BE amazing at that. What our secondary does for our pass rush SHOULD give Jones that extra bit of time needed to turn some his hurries into sacks and/or hits - we know good things come from that. Forced throws should be deadly with our new secondary. I do not care who we play - even if it one of those teams you mentioned. D's do not play D's - thankfully we have the BEST big-game QB in the business - and when we strike a long-term deal with Revis - we MAY be able to say OF ALL TIME.

I fixed your post. You're welcome.

We can only hope the league will balance itself by placing a renewed emphasis on defense after going too far in the opposite direction for years.

In 22 quarters after Gronk got hurt vs. Cleveland, the Patriots scored 181 points. That comes to 8.2 points per quarter. That comes to 32.9 points per game. Shave off a little due to defensive scores, and we're still looking at an offense capable of 30+ points a game even without Gronk.

Won't get that every game, of course. But it's still a very capable offense.

Now, let's put that on the field alongside a top 3 defense, which is what NE is shaping up to be (not considering injuries), and we have a very, very strong Super Bowl contender on our hands.

If they add one more quality defensive piece and WR through FA or trade, then add a stud TE and defensive player through the draft, and we are talking about a potentially dominant team on both sides of the ball.
