Broncos sign Aqib Talib

Even though the Broncos are going all-in for Manning (something the Pats have never done with Brady), I take small solace in the fact that Manning just does not seem to have "it" in big games. He is one of the best to ever play but he routinely comes up small in the playoffs.

I just hope history stays its course and the Winner of the FA Super Bowl does not win the real one.

I still have no idea what BB and team do from a FA side. He is still one of the best coaches ever, but his team management seemingly has not been what it once was.

I hope Denver loses in the playoffs after round one.

In terms of the "All In" by the Broncos, they may have done it one year too late. What does Welker have left. He looked ordinary in the playoffs and was slowing down before the concussions. Manning at 38 could see a serious decline in his game (he could barely throw over 20 yards last year). If those two are still as good as they were at the start of last year, it should be a good gamble. Otherwise, their defense may be much better and their offense will be much worse (which still will make them a good offense, but not otherworldly).

I wouldn't have given him that deal either

42 pages of whining and moaning... Wonder how many posters even remember when the Pats last losing season occured.

I always appreciate the consistency of this team but you really deny the fact that BB makes it hard on themselves by going after few to no quality FA's, drafts reasonably well but not great, and tries and usually succeeds in getting far w/JAG's and backups seeing significant playing time. What could we be if we combined the excellent coaching w/good offseasons.

Are you honestly in denial over the fact that:

1) Denver was the better team last year, and
2) Since that AFCCG, Denver has gotten better and we have gotten worse

...?

But don't worry folks, we'll have plenty of cap space available when Chase Rettig takes over for Tom Brady down the road.

Better not talk like that or you'll be called a troll. The Patriots shouldn't
have let Talib delay. Now most of the good options are gone. Talk
about Revis is utter nonsense.

Maybe the Patriots are getting what they deserve. They have a player
like Edelman with a lousy contract who busts his butt and has 105 receptions. They offer him a cut rate contract as a reward.

Who cares about winning seasons....we should care about winning superbowls with our HOF QB...which we have not done in 9seasons. and our chief Rival (with another HOF QB) seems to be going all in to do so with him.

we cant keep leaving Brady out to dry. When brady retires Will we care about all the 12+ win seasons or will we be thinking "hmm we shouldve done more to win another one with brady"

because if we could get so far with the flawed rosters we had. imagine if we actually went all in.

What do propose as a solution? You are aware of the Salary Cap aren't you?

There's a lot of teams out there capable of signing some quality players w/o entering cap hell. Don't see why the Pats can't do the same.

Why the hell are people talking about adding Revis? There is no way that is going to happen. Do people really see Belichick paying Revis that much money to come to New England? It's more likely the team is going to sort through the second tier of free agents at CB like Browner, Tillman, etc. than it is that Revis will come here.

One thing about Talib. He was elite for what? Five or six games? After he injured his hip covering Jimmy Graham, he was never the same.

Also, I am hearing people on the radio killing Belichick for not franchising Talib when three weeks ago, EVERYONE thought it would have been a monumentally stupid move to franchise Talib at that tag dollar. The Hindsight is 20/20 brigade is out in full force.

I agree. They will get some second rate CBs and they will rely on a 37 year old Brady to carry the team with his misfit receivers.

Schefter! Check his tweet.
@AdamSchefter:

And now with CB Aqib Talib a Bronco, Patriots figure to make a real push for Darrelle Revis

How are the pats going to make a push for Revis when they couldn't afford to keep Talib?Do these reporters understand the salary cap? The only chance Revis ends up in NE is if he gets released and signs for cheap money. You have a better chance of hitting the lottery twice in one year.

By the way people are running their mouths about how the team is ran, you'd think the Patriots haven't made the playoffs in the past three years. Yet they played in the AFC championship three times and a Super Bowl. That takes a good GM and great salary cap management.

The Broncos season ended in embarrassment last season, and the defense wasn't the reason behind that. They get a random number of games with a dice roll on playoff games with Talib. They payed him like he was the most durable player in the game. If you can't see why New England didn't agree/attempt to match that, it's only because you don't want to open your eyes.

This team will play itself into the playoffs and do what they do. Compete.

Every team but one loses eventually, so not winning the Super Bowl isn't some unlikely outcome that should shame us all. They don't have a Super Bowl win since the 2004 season? OH MY GOD! Let's cry together in pure rage at the jerk Bill Bilicheck because he wont sign every player I've seen have a highlight on Sports Center. You know, some teams still haven't won one Super Bowl? Most teams haven't won a Super Bowl since 2004. A lot of teams have a handful of playoff appearances in that time. Some have zero.

The Broncos season ended at the Super Bowl. The Patriots season ended in embarrassment before that. Too many here seem to have put that fact out of their minds.

I had hopes that the Patriots would sign at least one of the higher end CBs in FA, that hope has been dashed.

Great! Let's pass out the participation trophies....

I'm *****ing furious the Broncos got Talib, Ward, and now Ware any second now.

There won't even be any point in watching next year unless the Patriots actually bother to do something notable to improve this team. (Cut Wilfork, bring in Revis) I guess they're content with just winning the division and losing eventually in the post-season. Preferably in the AFCCG.

Wow... talk about hyperbole... it's thanks to Kraft, Belichick, front office, players etc. for sustained success these past thirteen years, yet you react via the syntax I bolded in your post like a Cleveland Browns fan ready to give up in early March... but I suppose for some Patriots fans (like you), it is not enough, and the Patriots are abject failures if they do not win multiple Lombardi trophies in March, May, July-February.

Please, if this is so insufferable that you are considering forfeiting 2014 after a few hours of free agency, then feel free to root for another team whose philosophy better suits your sentiments...

After all, it is only a game (e.g. entertainment) and there is no sense developing a "life trap" over something this frivolous...

Belichick will pay for special players. There is a decent chance the Pats sign him. I wouldn't bet money, but Revis is one of those once or twice in a generation players. Belichick has paid for that (see Wilfork and Mankins). A guy like Revis never usually hits the open market. So this is uncharted territory.

This isn't paying big bucks for a typical best player in free agency who will set the market at his position even though he isn't really in the top five in terms of talent. Revis arguably the best CB in NFL history. I think Belichick would pay for that especially since his asking price won't be exponentially more than what Talib or Vontae Davis got.

I think you have made an excellent point here, everyone points to winning seasons as the tell all, but the Patriots play in a horrible division, the Bills, Dolphins, and Jets are consistently in the bottom 15 teams in the NFL year in and year out. We also have the GOAT playing QB, and in a QB league, that is the biggest difference maker.

The other QBs considered the best in the NFL over the last decade have all won at least one Super Bowl –

- Ben Roethlisberger
- Drew Brees
- Aaron Rodgers
- Peyton Manning

This team is in too much transition in my opinion, outside of Brady it is a constant array of moving parts. Right now we are without our RB, Y-WR, OC, MLB, LCB, SS, add to question marks at WR, TE, RG, DT, and NT, and it is worrisome for sure. If you look at the Super Bowl years the core of the team was consistent for the most part throughout, they added some veterans every years who helped but they core was intact.

Coming from a guy who kills Belichick for not winning a Super Bowl since 2004. Belichick ruined this team because they lost two Super Bowls in the final minute, but Elway did a fantastic job because his team got absolutely embarrassed in the Super Bowl. Maybe if the Giants blew the Pats out in the Super Bowls, you would have a higher impression of Belichick the GM.

You an advocate of overpaying people? 8 AFC Championships 5 Superbowl Apperances with 3 wins with the 2 losses comming on miracle catchs. Ya I 'm pretty happy with BB. You see I remember when the Pats sucked.

I'm with you. The Pats' strategy is a proven winner. What the Broncos is doing hasn't worked to win a Super Bowl since maybe the 90s. Can anyone remember the last team that bought a Super Bowl winner by paying top dollar in free agency?

I think you break from the strategy to pay a guy like Revis because those guys never hit the open market. Most elite players with no real question marks (other than wanting money) never hit the open market. I don't mind seeing them paying big bucks for an once in a generation player like Revis, but otherwise stick with the strategy that works.

I do not understand why people sleep on Tillman, I know he is 33 years old but he just turned it back at the end of February and last season he was still extremely productive. He missed 8 games but in his other 8 games he had 41 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions, 7 pass defends, 4 run stuffs. In 2012, he was completely ridiculous, in 16 games, he had 86 tackles, 10 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 3 interceptions, 16 pass defends, 2 run stuffs, 3 defensive touchdowns. He creates turnovers and is a difference maker, I would be all for adding him to this roster, we could use him at safety opposite McCourty, and he would reap havoc.
