Edelman offered 3-year deal, he opts to test free agency

ESPN Boston says to keep an eye on free agent Emmanuel Sanders for the Patriots.

Hard to fault either side, if true.

From the team's perspective, that is a better contract than I was anticipating they would offer. And they did it right loading it with incentives that would increase Edelman's payday if he can stay on the field. The guy played one full season injury-free and benefitted largely from there not being another receiver on the roster with experience, either in the system or with Brady.

From Edelman's side, life in this league is short and he wants to get paid. Another team might be willing to pay more than the Pats have and he wants to explore his options as a former seventh rounder. I say go for it.

The loss of Edelman is not that big of a deal, if he goes. They simply need to be able to move on and replace him. Nicks, Sanders, Tate... all viable options. Jason Avant, however, is not.

Please let this guy walk. We've got the no speed/questionable hands/ can't beat press coverage thing locked up. Sign someone to stretch the freaking field and hope Brady somehow discovers the ability to throw a deep ball.

Great post.

One could argue that we've arguably overpaid for Logan Mankins. Wes Welker got nearly $10M in his last contract with the Pats. Randy Moss got paid. Adalius Thomas got paid. Vince Wilfork got paid. Mayo got paid. Gronk got paid. And we're paying now for paying Aaron Hernandez.

Reiss makes just that point (and with numbers to back it up). The Pats aren't cheap at all. But they haven't gotten the best bang for their buck lately, either.

New England Patriots have spent on free agents, but not wisely - ESPN Boston

Cmon, Ocho Cinco, Joey Galloway, Donald Hayes aside they've been pretty good finding these types. Austin Collie for one, surpassed my expectations last year.

BB is not great picking wide outs. Correct me if I am wrong but the only good receivers he has ever drafted was Branch and Givens. The best best FA he signed was Moss and Welker, who was not Welker at the time.

Don't forget to add Reche Caldwell, Chad Jackson, Doug Gabriel, bethel johnson, Taylor Price, Jeremy Ebert, Brandon Tate, Matthew Slater , P.K. Sam, Brandon Lloyd, Kamar Aiken, Torry Holt to the list of BB flops.

And what is scary is that Collie Brady's most reliable receiver for a couple of games last season.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you were never a Patriots fan before 2001.

I was 7 in 2001, so I was just getting into football.

I'm just frustrated that we're gonna let another 100+ catch receiver go and fans are going to applaud us for being so much smarter than every other team for sticking to the model. It's stupid. The model is not working.

I just want us to maximize the Brady/Belichick window. That's all.

Maybe a receiver, like Deion Branch, in 2006 instead of a bunch of scrubs and we beat Indy.

It's just funny that people think the reason we win a lot in the regular season is because of our shrewdness in free agency and NOT the best QB and coach of all time. Our stupidness in free agency has held us back.

Oh Boy...now the fanboys are gonna label you a troll.....truth be dammed. Don't mention the 9 years without a SB trophy despite the GOAT....that really sends them into the shakes. Almost winning has a nice sound

I don't blame Edelman for testing the market. I just hope the Pats have a solid backup plan. Currently they have Gronk coming off an ACL tear, Dobson with foot surgery, Amendola and his injury history, and 2 other WRs who just finished their rookie seasons. I think they should go after someone who can stretch the field vertically, something they have lacked for a few seasons now.

Austin Collie says HELLO!! And who said they can't reacquire TJ Moe?

ok. Playing amateur GM.

How much would you pay him? lets see how close it is to his actual deal...

Robert Kraft: "We wanted Julian back but, when he didn't sign before Tuesday, we had to move on to plan B."

Jonathan Kraft: "It was his agent's fault."

Edelman's agent: "The deal was not fair value, and we didn't appreciate the deadline issued."

Tom Brady: "%#$@&"

Problem was the backup plan was not great least season. Hopefully its better this season.

Back up plan wasn't even back up plan it was back, back up plan Edelman.

There will be an excuse filled speech by Bob Kraft later in the day.

is that a picture of welker after he dropped the game winning catch or Talib after Welker took him out of the game?

Perhaps we should wait and see how things play out. If Edelman walks and is not adequately replaced, then I'll agree with you. I do think, however, that BB can and does learn from his mistakes, and I'd be shocked if it happens again.

Hawkins is a player I've mentioned. If he's over that high ankle sprain, he's got the 'quick' more than Edelman and Amendola.

I was being sarcastic, and I can't believe I forgot to mention all those other stiffs you listed. Although I have to say I have no idea who that Chris Johnson is. Do you mean Chad Jackson? He has to be on the list.

Love your remarks. I predicted Kraft's speech a couple days ago.

If Dobson and another WR are in place and producing, I really wouldn't mind DA and Collie manning the slot.
